Background / History
Dawn was a human paladin and hero of the Golden Country. In its final era of conflict and internal strife, false deities sought divine authority. Dawn struck down one such false god by piercing its heart with the “radiance of glory,” but died from its counterattack and sealed it within her blade. 77
Her soul remained in the neglected Dawn Sanctuary for centuries. As her attendants and the memory of her deeds vanished, her initial rage at being forgotten became resentment toward time, fate, and herself. 185
Seeking resurrection and further great deeds, Dawn orchestrated a plan involving a necromancer and a constructed body. She acknowledges that her actions were evil, but initially believed future glory could outweigh her wrongdoing. 80
The necromancer Deis placed Dawn’s soul into an undead flesh-golem body. The body has no head, while Dawn perceives her surroundings directly through her soul rather than conventional senses. 81
Appearance
Dawn’s appearance has changed repeatedly with her condition and surroundings.
- As a soul, she appears as a graceful female silhouette enveloped in dazzling light. 77
- In her resurrected form, she is a headless, pale-bodied undead paladin; black mist rises from her neck beneath her helmet. 81 151
- Her constructed body is described as slender, strong, and proportioned according to her own ideal of perfection. 89 106
- A Wild Magic surge temporarily transforms her into a palm-sized armored knight doll, unable to wield weapons or cast spells. 236
- In Ebony Forest, her subconscious gives her a human face: raven-black hair, blue-gray eyes, and the traits of a northern Nord. She considers this form familiar, though her memories remain incomplete. 287 288
- Her original body is believed to have been left somewhere in the Northlands. 288
Personality
Dawn is formal, steadfast, and intensely devoted to glory, honor, and confronting challenges. She takes pride in her past feats, reacts strongly to praise, and often measures herself against heroic ideals. 80 152 304
Her pursuit of atonement is complicated by her early belief that enough future achievements could “overshadow” past crimes. After confronting Jasmine’s resentment and Tang Qi’s criticism, she recognizes that her wish to be forgiven was partly self-serving. She resolves to correct this utilitarian mindset even if forgiveness never comes. 176
Despite her severity toward herself, Dawn is compassionate in practice. She heals the injured, comforts tormented undead, protects Jasmine from a distance after being rejected, and rescues a bird-demon girl during a storm. 81 83 139 296
Abilities & Skills
Soul Perception and Telepathy
Dawn’s soul allows her to sense her surroundings without a head or physical sensory organs.
- Communicates mentally with Tang Qi; at first, no one else can hear her thoughts. 80
- Perceives targets accurately in obscuring mist, where sight is unreliable. 163
- Can detect and dispel scarlet mist with Divine Sense. 218
- Her perception can be bypassed; Hope slips away without Dawn noticing. 155
Paladin Magic
Dawn retains powerful holy abilities despite being an undead creature.
- [Supreme Holy Slash] — Channels golden holy radiance through her broken sword; especially effective against undead and capable of cutting through powerful enemies. 80 200
- [Holy Heal] — Alleviates injuries and suffering through a sacred chant. Its holy power burns and damages Dawn’s undead body, and the energy replenishes slowly. 81 175
- [Resurrection Spell] — Can restore life; using it to save Tang Qi during a Wild Magic surge contributed to her doll transformation. 236
- [Swift Aura] — Enhances the running speed of nearby allies. 156
- [Divine Sense] — Reveals or disperses supernatural hazards such as scarlet mist. 218
Channel Divine Power: Peerless Athlete
Dawn’s oath of honor strengthens her body when she faces a challenge.
- Doubles her physical prowess. 151
- Enables explosive leaps, rapid aerial charges, and overwhelming melee pressure. 151 295
- Lets her overpower multiple flying bird monsters despite being restrained by their combined strength. 295
Combat Skill
Dawn is an exceptionally capable close-range fighter whose soul drives her body with little regard for the weight of armor.
- Defeated a newborn dragon with a single blow from her greatsword. 89
- Dismembered a giant toad-like creature in seconds and crushed it against a wall with a punch. 101 102
- Charged through an ambush to kill a warlock before he could recover from surprise. 151
- Fought multiple bandits alone while scouting their cave hideout, even when unarmed. 152
- Can fight effectively without armor or weapons; Tang Qi considers her the obvious choice in an unarmed duel. 311
Spore Communication
After exposure to spores, Dawn can interface with their network.
- Prevented spores from invading her undead body by communicating with those remaining on her arm. 150
- May be able to track fungal communities through their network. 150
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Broken greatsword — Dawn’s primary weapon and the remnant of the Sword of Dawn; it channels Supreme Holy Slash. 89 200
- Shield — Used alongside her sword in combat. 193
- Ring of Glory — A legendary ring that carries Dawn’s soul and is held by Tang Qi. Its radiance functions as a Light spell that dispels magical darkness; Tang Qi is also able to shatter the ring with Dawn’s permission. 82
- Arcane Powered Plate Armor — Repaired and enchanted by Stella after Leon split Dawn and her prior armor in two. 194
- Grants flame resistance and increased walking speed.
- Includes detachable, returning gauntlets with a 30-meter range.
- Cannot be removed without Dawn’s consent.
- Can replace missing limbs and move as naturally as her own body. 194
Relationships
- Tang Qi — Teammate, summoner, and the person Dawn asks to witness and record her atonement. He challenges her self-justifications but respects her right to pursue her own path. 81 117 176
- Jasmine — Sister of a mercenary whose death is tied to Dawn’s past decisions. Jasmine rejects Dawn’s help, but Dawn continues protecting her quietly from afar. 117 139 176
- Catherine — Teammate who initially fears Dawn’s headless appearance but later trusts her healing ability. 81
- Gravel — Tang Qi’s dwarf companion; wary of Dawn at first, but frequently fights alongside her. Their exchanges can become tense when he dismisses her past achievements. 81 88
- Shalti — Companion in Ebony Forest who helps Dawn with her diary and hears her stories of past glory. 304
- Stella — Artificer who repairs Dawn’s body and transforms her Flame-Resistant Plate Armor into Arcane Powered Plate Armor. 194
- Leon Heart — Public Lord and legendary Oathbreaker whom Dawn distrusts. He defeats her with an opposing Supreme Holy Slash and splits her body in two. 179 193
