History

At the beginning of the story, Konoha faces deep internal strain. The Hyuga Clan functions as a “village within a village,” with the Branch Family bound by the Caged Bird seal, while the aftermath of the Nine-Tails incident has left the Uchiha Clan under surveillance and locked in a cycle of distrust with the village. 1 12

Hiruzen permits Hyuga Makoto, a Branch Family member and the orphaned son of Konoha heroes, to enter the ANBU. The decision is intended both to honor Hizashi Hyuga's wishes and to give Konoha greater influence within the Hyuga Clan. 1 3 5

Makoto's successes against Kirigakure's Ao, Orochimaru, and other threats raise his standing with both the Hokage and the Hyuga. His public recognition as the ninja who recovered Ao's Byakugan strengthens the Branch Family's influence and makes him a bridge between the clan and Konoha. 17 23

The Uchiha crisis escalates into an attempted massacre led by Uchiha Itachi. Konoha forces, led by Hiruzen and Danzō, intervene at the Uchiha compound, while Makoto confronts Obito and later attacks Itachi's position. 74 76 Survivors including Uchiha Izumi and Uchiha Sasuke later enter Makoto's ANBU squad. 104

The Hyuga Clan is subsequently liberated from the Caged Bird system. Hiruzen credits Makoto's sealing ability and influence with resolving the Main Family–Branch Family conflict and bringing the clan closer to Konoha. 94 110
