Geography and Access

• Mount Myōboku is hidden in another dimension. Its outer region forms a maze of looping trails, cliffs, pits and stone bridges, making the mountain difficult to find or enter by ordinary travel 511 605 621.
• A visitor can reach it through toad summoning or a secret passage. Reaching the Toad Sage through the outer maze constitutes its entry trial 605.
• Moss and ferns cover its ground. Its Toad Stone Forest contains an oil pool and statues of practitioners who failed to balance Natural Energy during senjutsu training 511 512 634.

Independence and Sage Training

Mount Myōboku is not part of the Leaf Village. Sage Fukasaku states that its purpose is to protect the Ninja World’s peace and find the Child of Prophecy 119. Its toads permit outsiders—including Cloud Village ninja—to seek instruction if they reach the mountain and pass its trial; Jiraiya cannot override that rule on Konoha’s behalf 519.

• Method: Toad Oil helps a practitioner absorb Natural Energy, while Mount Myōboku’s environment makes that energy easier to sense. Training there is described as ten times more effective than training elsewhere 518 928.
• Risk: Absorbing too much Natural Energy can turn a trainee into a stone toad. Toad Martial Venerable can use a rod to knock excess energy out of a trainee during supervised practice 512 518.
• Contract: Jiraiya keeps the mountain’s Summoning Scroll and has Shisui sign it, giving him access to its summoning toads 332.

Techniques and Defenses

Toad Song

Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima perform this sound-based genjutsu together using a choral scale passed down by Mount Myōboku 25.

• Affected listeners are drawn into a barrier where giant toads bind their minds; their bodies cannot move or form hand seals, and their chakra flow is suppressed 25 289.
• Liao Wu counters the anticipated technique by destroying his hearing in one encounter, but is caught when the sages use it before he can do so in another 166 289.

Toad Grand Chant

The mountain’s toads cast this large-scale genjutsu by croaking in unison. Sage Shima and Toad Martial Venerable control it and can exempt toads and designated allies 605 606.

• Its sound-wave vibrations pull targets into an illusionary Toad world; simply blocking one’s hearing does not prevent its effect 605 606.
• During Madara’s invasion, it controls most attackers and severely suppresses the few who remain conscious, allowing the Ninja Alliance to counterattack 627.

Barrier and Surveillance

• A barrier protects Mount Myōboku, though Liao Wu later finds a weak point with his Sharingan and Rinnegan and enters through it 912.
• The Great Toad Sage’s crystal ball lets the mountain’s and Ninja Sect’s leaders watch Madara and Liao Wu approach 614.

Notable Items and Sites

• Toad Oil: Used in senjutsu training and to prepare Mount Myōboku’s Sage Talisman paper. Liao Wu and Candy later drain the oil pool 634 635.
• Sage Talisman: A secret treasure associated with the Great Toad Sage; its paper is made from Chakra Paper soaked in Toad Oil 594 634.
• Toad registry: Kept by Toad Jade. A toad’s name disappearing from it signals their death 517 634.
• Great Toad Sage’s temple: The sage’s residence and the place where he receives visitors, including Hashirama 611.

History

Sage Fukasaku and Shima intervene beyond the mountain when they bring giant toads to Konoha after Danzo insults the Great Toad Sage. Fukasaku uses the visit to assert Mount Myōboku’s independence from the Leaf Village 119. Later, its toads join Jiraiya in battle, and the Two Great Sages support both Jiraiya and Minato with Sage Mode techniques 22 289.

Mount Myōboku shelters Kushina and Yugito during the conflict with Madara and trains them in senjutsu 511 519. After Madara kills Fukasaku, the toads mourn and the Great Toad Sage orders the mountain to prepare for war 521 522. Madara’s approaching attack prompts the Ninja Alliance to relocate there. Mount Myōboku tests the Toad Grand Chant, receives Cloud Village’s Turtle Island, and becomes the site of a major battle when Madara’s forces invade 599 605 611 621 627.

The battle damages the mountain and its Toad Stone Forest; some toads are not revived afterward 635 668. Fukasaku declines Tobirama’s offer to give the Two Great Sages seats in the Ninja Sect, preferring to limit the Sage Holy Land’s involvement in worldly affairs. Tobirama promises Alliance help with restoration 668.

In later Rōran-linked events, the Great Toad Sage dreams that Liao Wu will destroy Mount Myōboku. He turns himself to stone with Senjutsu Chakra; Liao Wu finds him gone and leaves the other toads alive. His death leaves the mountain without its prophet and guide 912 913. Fukasaku and Shima subsequently propose teaching Naruto Mount Myōboku’s senjutsu, but agree to conduct the training in the Leaf Village because its leaders will not send him away 927 928.
