Background and History

Warring States and the founding of the Leaf

The Uchiha and Senju were rival clans during the Warring States Period. Opposing employers frequently hired them against one another. Although their leading fighters could contend with each other, the Uchiha gradually lost ground against the Senju and their allies. The clans eventually formed an alliance and founded the Leaf Village 151 389 669.

Madara later tried to lead the Uchiha out of the Leaf. The war-weary clan chose to stay, and he left alone. Within the village, the clan came to be led by the Police Force captain and its senior officers rather than by a clan leader; Madara remained its last clan leader 51 173 386.

The Leaf Village dispute

The Uchiha sought a Hokage from their own clan but remained politically isolated. Most Uchiha shinobi served in the Police Force, while appointments elsewhere were rare. Their policing also generated resentment among villagers, compounding the leadership’s distrust of them 143 877 902.

When news spread that Madara was alive, Fugaku convened the clan at Naka Shrine to debate whether to remain with the Leaf or join him. The clan then marched on the Hokage Building to demand that the next Hokage be an Uchiha. The Third Hokage agreed to nominate Fugaku, and Shisui was permitted to join the Anbu 51 52 53. Once Madara’s Moon Eye Plan became known, Fugaku and the assembled Uchiha rejected it and committed to opposing him 143.

Madara threatened to revoke the surname of any Leaf Uchiha who fought him. The Flame Uchiha Gunbai, carried by Madara and later Liao Wu, served as the traditional token of clan leadership, but Fugaku’s faction continued fighting alongside the Ninja Alliance 173 599.

War and reconciliation

Fugaku revealed his Mangekyō Sharingan and used Susanoo in battle. When Uchiha fighters were injured fighting Sasori’s forces, Senju shinobi treated them—an unusual act of cooperation between clans that had generally kept apart even while living in the same village 460 461 464. The Uchiha later celebrated Shisui’s recognized service and his apprenticeship under Jiraiya as signs of an improving relationship with the Leaf 330.

The massacre account

A later account describes a different outcome for the clan: after a Nine-Tails attack, the Leaf relocated the Uchiha to its outskirts and monitored them closely. The clan prepared a coup over several years. Itachi, acting on the village leadership’s orders, carried out the massacre with Obito’s help against the Police Force; Root stood ready to intervene if they failed 922 923. This account is distinct from the earlier events in which the clan fights alongside the Ninja Alliance.

Abilities and Skills

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the clan’s hereditary eye technique, but not every Uchiha awakens it. It grants enhanced dynamic vision and predictive ability; its development is strongly tied to emotion 75 315 330.

• The clan’s awakened eyes range from One Tomoe through Three Tomoe to the rarer Mangekyō Sharingan 330 373.
• Mangekyō abilities vary between users. Documented clan members include Shisui, whose Kotoamatsukami can alter another person’s will, and Fugaku, who uses Susanoo 317 460 555.
• Mangekyō Sharingan can control tailed beasts; Obito and Kakashi use their eyes together to restrain the Nine-Tails within Naruto 721.
• The eyes can be transplanted, making them valuable to outsiders and prompting the clan to guard them closely 325 683.

Clan techniques

• Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique — used as a combined attack by clan members confronting Liao Wu in the Warring States era 731.
• Uchiha Flame Formation — a barrier technique used in the same confrontation 731.

Clan Holdings and Institutions

• Flame Uchiha Gunbai — an heirloom that rebounds ninjutsu and signifies the authority of successive clan leaders 20 599.
• Naka Shrine — the site of secret clan meetings and the resting place of ancestral remains brought to the Leaf, including Izuna’s 51 618.
• Reserve Sharingan — forty spare eyes are recorded: ten Three Tomoe eyes and thirty with fewer tomoe. They are kept for emergencies and as rewards for major service to the clan 330.
• Police Force — the clan’s principal institution in the Leaf; Fugaku serves as its captain during the dispute over Madara 1 173 464.

Relationships

• Leaf Village — co-founded by the Uchiha, but its leadership’s distrust and the clan’s political exclusion repeatedly strain their allegiance 51 143 902.
• Senju Clan — former battlefield rival and co-founder of the Leaf; its shinobi later provide medical aid to wounded Uchiha during the Ninja Alliance’s fighting 389 464.
• Madara Uchiha — the clan’s last clan leader; the Uchiha refuse to follow him out of the Leaf and later oppose his Moon Eye Plan 51 143 173.
• Fugaku Uchiha — Police Force captain who leads the clan’s negotiations with the Leaf and its opposition to Madara 51 53 143.
