Background / History
Early schemes
An aged Madara operates from the Graveyard of Mountains, where he regards the conflict among ninja villages as useful for weakening them and making his plans in Kirigakure easier to implement. He offers his Sharingan to a silent black-robed figure, calling the eyes “perfect and powerful.” 31
Madara monitors those who discover the Uchiha ancestral stone tablet through a black-and-white humanoid clone. After Uchiha Yu perceives hidden information on the tablet, White Zetsu contacts her, returns her father’s Sharingan, and draws her into Madara’s sphere of influence. 48
Yu fakes her death, leaves a Sharingan for Haku, and trains beside Madara to uncover her bloodline and become strong enough to support Haku. 48 49
Kirigakure and Haku
Madara controls the Fourth Mizukage, Karatachi Yagura, keeping Kirigakure neutral before the Third Shinobi War and intending to further weaken the village through the Blood Mist plan. 96 109 112
When Haku meets him, Madara is physically frail and uses transplanted ordinary Sharingan, yet Haku senses immense energy within him. Madara tests Haku’s worth by demanding a demonstration of his strength, then agrees to let Haku borrow his power. 109 110
Haku’s destruction of the Three-Tails and the simultaneous disappearance of White Zetsu clones in Kirigakure alarm Madara and his agents. Madara begins treating Haku as an unpredictable variable capable of disrupting his plans. 116 124
Obito and the Ten-Tails plan
With his body deteriorating after losing the Rinnegan, Madara links himself to the Ten-Tails’ husk to prolong his strength. He directs Black Zetsu to implant false memories and poison into Rin Nohara as part of the plan to force Obito’s awakening. 124
Madara regards Obito as the most talented Uchiha he has seen in years apart from Yu, believing that Obito’s kindness will produce greater power after exposure to suffering. 124
Obito later realizes that Madara manipulated Rin’s death with a powerful genjutsu cast using the last of Madara’s life force. 187
Fourth Great Ninja War
Madara is first summoned through Impure World Reincarnation, but immediately recognizes that the resurrected body is incomplete and cannot contain his full power. Obito delays him by taking him into Kamui Space. 180
He later returns to the battlefield alongside Obito and Black Zetsu, terrifying the Akatsuki members with his presence. After casually repelling the Ten-Tails’ Tailed Beast Ball, Madara absorbs the Ten-Tails and becomes its Jinchūriki. 184 185
Madara demands that Akatsuki choose between opposing him and obeying him; the organization sides with him. He then fights the Allied Ninja Forces while insisting that Hashirama Senju must be made to understand the error of his ideals. 186
Although Obito, Kakashi, Sasuke, Naruto, and the Hokages oppose him, Madara withstands their attacks and prepares a large-scale Tailed Beast Ball. The Hokages trap him in a Four Red Yang Formation, but he later casts Infinite Tsukuyomi on the entire ninja world. 188 189
Appearance
Madara is first depicted as an aged, frail man whose body nevertheless contains immense energy. During his later return, he wears red armor and carries the Uchiha Gunbai; after becoming the Ten-Tails’ Jinchūriki, his armor changes into white robes. 109 184 185
- Transplanted ordinary Sharingan during his aged period 109
- Red armor and Uchiha Gunbai in battle 184
- Nine tomoe manifested across his back after absorbing the Ten-Tails 185
- Nine black orbs orbiting his Six Paths form 185
Personality
Madara is intensely self-assured and responds to threats with contempt rather than caution. Even after admitting that his body could not withstand the realm he once reached, he insists that he has nothing to fear because he is Madara Uchiha. 109
He is also calculating and long-term focused. He uses village conflicts to weaken rivals, treats people such as Yu, Obito, and Nagato as components of larger plans, and adapts his strategy after Haku destroys the Three-Tails. 31 48 124
His rivalry with Hashirama is ideological as well as personal. Madara believes the world Hashirama created was mistaken and seeks to impose a replacement order through overwhelming power. 186 188
