Background / History

Hanzo was once regarded as an invincible “Demigod” whose personal strength secured the Land of Rain’s independence. He had fought the Konoha Sannin in the past, and even in old age he retained power beyond that of an ordinary Kage. 64 106

By the time of Haku’s arrival in the Land of Rain, Hanzo had become increasingly intolerant of outstanding people and viewed the growing Akatsuki Organization as a threat. Acting on intelligence largely supplied by Danzo, he blockaded towns, prohibited residents from leaving the country, and ordered outsiders captured while pursuing the resistance. 41 54

Hanzo’s health steadily declined due to the burden of his own Salamander Poison. Determined to reaffirm his standing before becoming incapacitated, he stationed forces throughout the country and prepared to demonstrate that the Land of Rain could not be bullied. 55

Personality

Hanzo was intensely proud of his identity as the Demigod of the Ninja World. Danzo could provoke him simply by questioning his status or suggesting that he should compromise with Akatsuki. 100

His authority had become rigid and fear-driven. Sugimoto believed that Hanzo had lost the magnanimity he once possessed after the Land of Rain’s defeat by the major nations, relying too heavily on his individual power instead of accepting counsel. 60

Despite this decline, Hanzo retained a warrior’s pride and resolve. He refused surrender when betrayed by Danzo, killed Danzo while critically wounded, and chose to die by Haku’s hand rather than fall to Danzo’s forces. 102 107 108

Hanzo confronts Haku outside Rain Mountain Castle, combines poison, his Salamander, and ninjutsu against Haku’s Seven Gates and Daytime Tiger, and forces Haku to retreat at immense physical cost to both fighters. 63 64
