Background

Chen Chen discovered the object hidden in a highly concealed location in a classroom. It was a long, seamless black drive with no branding or stated capacity; only its USB connector identified it as a USB drive 1 2.

At first, the drive appeared unresponsive and did not receive an automatic drive letter. After Chen Chen reset his laptop’s BIOS settings, it appeared as a removable device and accepted copied video files 2. While watching Detective Pikachu from the drive, Chen Chen obtained Pikachu’s cap from the film, beginning his investigation into its capabilities 2 3.

Chen Chen initially called its effect “materialization,” but later concluded that the drive does not create matter from electricity. Instead, it spends energy to establish a connection with another world and allows objects to be extracted through that connection 31 47 79.

The drive’s apparent origin became more troubling when Chen Chen watched Lucy and found that its final USB drive was visually identical to his own. He subsequently described the artifact as a “key” for beings inside a closed world to reach the world outside it 48.

Zhao Shanhe later identified himself as the second holder of the Plane Key and stated that he had left the artifact for Chen Chen. Zhao possessed it in 1984, when it reportedly took the form of a CD, and used its power while founding the Earth Federation 418 595.

The USB Drive is an unusually long, rod-like device with a single exposed USB interface.
