Qian Wenhuan was a Central Continent native working in Switzerland, where he served as Preston Biological Company’s Sales Manager. His work kept him separated from his wife and daughter for much of the year. Although he earned 20,000 Swiss francs per month, taxes, insurance, rent, utilities, and food consumed much of his income; he remained in the position for the salary despite considering resignation. 49 51

During a flight from the Central Continent to Switzerland, he sat beside Chen Chen. Initially amused by Chen Chen studying German on the plane, Qian believed the young man was posturing—until Chen apparently mastered the language over the course of the flight. 50 51

After Chen Chen’s company acquired Preston Biological Company, Qian encountered him again as the Central Continent representative behind the takeover. Chen Chen later offered him a major role in Namibia. Qian chose to follow Chen despite being offered a secure path back to Switzerland, explaining that his intuition saw “infinite possibilities” in Chen Chen. 51 56 72
