Background / History
After arriving on the Douluo Continent with Zhongli, Paimon agreed to a contract that allowed outsiders to believe she was his Martial Soul. The arrangement was only a cover: she had not actually become one. Her apparent lack of combat ability caused others to regard Zhongli as a crippled Soul Master, though Paimon remained a constant talking companion at his side 2.
Paimon rapidly adapted to Heaven Dou City, greeting locals by name after meeting them only once. Her ability to remember people and her constant commentary earned her a reputation as an unusually capable tour guide, even while locals initially dismissed her as an “unidentified flying object” or a mutated Martial Soul 2 38.
Her unusual existence drew the attention of Yu Xiaogang, who identified her publicly as a Body Separation Beast Martial Soul. He was astonished that she could fly, speak, think independently, and resemble an ordinary person in every meaningful way 4. Over time, influential figures—including Heaven Dou’s royal guards—treated her with deference because of her supposed connection to Zhongli, addressing her as “Lord Paimon” 78.
While living with Zhongli, Paimon became increasingly attached to Heaven Dou City’s food, people, and routine. She helped rescue the Cat Girl later named Chiyu, urged Zhongli to give Chiyu a proper name, and showed concern for Chiyu during her dangerous soul-ring hunts 54 62 63.
Zhongli gradually noticed that Paimon was physically growing and suspected that her seemingly ordinary form concealed a far greater nature. Paimon herself later reflected that she had followed Zhongli to Douluo while dazed during the “Moving House Technique,” leaving her unable to determine who from Teyvat would arrive next 140 328.
After several years apart, Lumine reunited with Paimon at Zhongli Manor. Lumine found that Paimon had grown larger and had been living comfortably under Zhongli’s care, leading to a chaotic dispute over Paimon’s hoarded food 479 480 481.
In the finale, Paimon revealed herself as the true Heavenly Principles. She disclosed that Teyvat had already been destroyed twice in prior failed attempts, and that relocating everyone to a new world was their final chance; her power had become too depleted to reverse time again 574.
Appearance
Paimon is a tiny, airborne girl whose size gradually increases over the course of the story. When Zhongli first observed her in Douluo, she was only a little over ten centimeters tall and not yet twenty centimeters in height 48.
- Floats freely and can stomp her feet in midair 1 4.
- Initially appears small enough that she could not realistically open large gates or lift military weapons 15 272.
- Is repeatedly mistaken for an unidentified flying object or an unprecedented Martial Soul 2 11.
- Has visibly grown by Chapters 140, 333, and 479 140 333 479.
Personality
Paimon is highly sociable, expressive, and candid. She eagerly greets strangers, speaks whatever is on her mind, and considers herself a professional guide. Her habit of explaining things and talking continuously led others to call her “God’s Mouth,” a label she rejects in favor of simply being Paimon 2 22.
Food is her most obvious weakness and greatest enthusiasm. Pastries, hotel meals, steamed buns, and new dishes can instantly improve her mood; she also stores away food she considers too precious to eat 38 102 481. Though she can be possessive of her stash, she is easily won over by small kindnesses and remembers favors for a long time 11.
Despite her naïveté, Paimon is compassionate. She arranged for the abused Cat Girl to be bought out of an auction, worried about Chiyu’s safety, and accepted Yue Guan without judging his eccentric appearance 54 62 74. She is deeply reliant on Zhongli as her protector, but also wants to become strong enough not to remain helpless 78 212.
Abilities & Skills
Flight
Paimon can fly and remain suspended in midair without visible equipment.
- Floats alongside Zhongli during travel and conversations 2 28.
- Her flight was one of the traits that astonished Yu Xiaogang and other Soul Masters 4.
- Her small body still limits her physical strength despite her mobility 272.
Spatial Storage
Paimon can store physical items without a visible Storage Soul Tool.
- Put away chests of jewels merely by touching them 21.
- Stores food, valuables, and her personal food boxes for later use 48 481.
- Qian Renxue suspected the ability might be related to a spatial attribute 21.
Memory and Guiding
Paimon remembers people, places, and food with unusual reliability, and naturally takes on a guide’s role.
- Calls Heaven Dou residents by name after meeting them once 2.
- Retains memories of people and favored foods even after long journeys away from the city 38.
- Guides Zhongli, Xiao, Guizhong, and Azhdaha through the Star Dou Great Forest and explains its history 459.
Concealed Heavenly Principles Power
Paimon’s true nature far exceeds the weak Martial Soul persona she maintains.
- Zhongli initially considered the possibility that she wielded the power of time 1.
- She later revealed knowledge of the “Moving House Technique” and responsibility for bringing people from Teyvat to Douluo 328.
- As the Heavenly Principles, she states that she had previously reversed time after two failed attempts, but could no longer do so because her power was depleted 574.
- She manifests a Great Teleportation Array during the creation of a new world 574.
Limitations
- Paimon is not actually Zhongli’s Martial Soul and therefore cannot simply absorb soul rings as outsiders assume 2 154 212.
- Zhongli could not find a method for her to grow stronger under ordinary conditions and could not perceive a “wish” that would allow him to give her a God’s Eye 212.
- Her apparent combat strength was repeatedly described as extremely low before her true identity was revealed 2 212 272.
Relationships
- Zhongli / Morax — Her closest companion and protector on Douluo. They entered the Martial Soul cover arrangement together, travel and dine together constantly, and remain mutually protective even after Paimon reveals herself as the Heavenly Principles 2 78 212 574.
- Lumine — Her former Traveler partner. Lumine searches for Paimon after arriving in another world; their reunion is affectionate but immediately becomes a comedic conflict over Paimon’s food 453 479 480.
- Qian Renxue / “Xue Qinghe” — A close friend who repeatedly uses food to persuade or reward Paimon, looks after her when Zhongli leaves, and offers to search for a spatial soul beast to supposedly strengthen her 45 212 215.
- Chiyu / Xiaofeilian — Paimon helped free Chiyu from the auction and encouraged Zhongli to name her. Though initially unable to understand Chiyu’s hatred of humans, she worries for Chiyu’s safety 54 60 62.
- Yue Guan — Yue Guan becomes devoted to Paimon after she accepts his eccentricity without judgment. He vows to fulfill her requests and regularly brings her elaborate pastries 74 102 152.
- Azhdaha / Ruo Tuo — A fellow traveler and subject of Paimon’s teasing. She objects when he calls her “little one,” while Xiao insists that she respect the Dragon King 417 466.
- Xianyun / Cloud Retainer — Xianyun notices Paimon’s growth soon after arriving on Douluo and later travels with her group 333 459.
- Diluc — An acquaintance from Teyvat who asks after Paimon upon arriving in Douluo and promises she can eat her fill if an opportunity arises 336.
