Background / History
Zhongli transmigrated to the Douluo Continent alongside Paimon. His consciousness, which should have been eroded away, recovered after arriving in a world free of the Heavenly Principles' curse; he realized he could survive indefinitely without Corrosion. After witnessing Martial Soul Avatars and Soul Masters, he identified the new world as the Douluo Continent and accepted his circumstances. 1
Although Paimon publicly presents him as an ordinary, good-for-nothing man with a strange flying Martial Soul, Zhongli is Morax—the Vago Rock Emperor who once protected Liyue. He initially wanders Douluo without obligations, having stepped down from his divine seat and believing that a peaceful era no longer needs Morax. Nevertheless, he remains willing to act whenever Liyue or the world's people require him. 2 7 15 22
His insight into Martial Soul Hall's structure, recruitment practices, and internal conflict earns the respect of “Xue Qinghe,” later revealed as Qian Renxue. She recruits him as a Guest Official of the Crown Prince's Mansion, while other major factions begin seeking his allegiance. 3 4 41
Zhongli later establishes himself as the Sect Master of the Innate Sect. He shares the Power of Faith with its members to improve their potential and heal old injuries, while contemplating relinquishing the position to Du Bafang and escaping renewed divine obligations. 325
After more inhabitants of Teyvat reach Douluo, Zhongli reunites with Xianyun, Xiao, Guizhong, Ruotuo, and others. He ultimately leads the group away from Douluo Star in search of a new world for Teyvat's displaced beings; after finding a suitable planet, they begin transforming it into a habitable home. 333 574
Appearance
Zhongli is repeatedly described as a handsome, elegant man whose calm bearing and faint melancholy can make him appear more like a refined noble young master than a feared Titled Douluo. 74 160
- Amber eyes that can shine like the sun. 201
- Dark, straight hair. 40
- Composed expression and measured, gentlemanly manner. 74 364
- In Martial Soul Avatar form, amber dragon horns emerge from his forehead. 95
- When revealing Morax's combat form, he is covered in runes and divine armor, with amber light and two circling chains. 416
Personality
Zhongli is calm, courteous, and rigorously thoughtful. He treats people of all stations with respect, discusses subjects ranging from policy to art without condescension, and often frames his conclusions as being reached “from a general rational perspective.” His humility and willingness to guide others earn admiration from scholars, students, nobles, and commoners alike. 73 131 143
He values contracts and promises deeply. His reputation for honoring agreements is so strong that public figures regard his presence as a guarantee of fairness, and Paimon states that he has never broken a promise. 159 222
Despite his restrained demeanor, Zhongli possesses a severe side. The death of Hagintos once drove Morax into “Boundless Killing Intent,” and his retaliation against the killer was so brutal that it terrified gods of the God Realm. 416
He gradually develops greater investment in Douluo's future. Rather than resolving every conflict through personal force, he recognizes that the struggle between commoners and nobles must be allowed to run its course if the world is to change. 487
Abilities & Skills
Divine Power and Geo Manipulation
Zhongli's actual power far exceeds that of ordinary Titled Douluo. He can fight without Soul Rings, Soul Power, Soul Skills, Soul Bones, or a Martial Soul, leading witnesses to recognize that he is not truly a Soul Master. 159 341
- Defeated the Titan Giant Ape and Sky Azure Bull Python—two Hundred-Thousand-Year Beast Kings—with three Rock Spears each. 29 30
- Held a Geo Hillichurl King one-handed, extracted its Elemental Power, and annihilated the surrounding Hillichurls with All-Devouring Void. 341
- Destroyed a distant mountain peak with a single claw strike while posing as a hundred-thousand-year Soul Skill. 96
- Can reinforce seals on powerful immortal energy, as seen after Qi Qi resurrected the battlefield's dead. 553
- Faced the gods of the God Realm in his true form and compelled the Asura God to apologize and sever his own arm. 416
Amber Shield
Zhongli's first displayed Soul Skill manifests an amber shield of extraordinary durability.
- Protected Paimon, Qian Renxue, and Ci Xue from repeated assaults by the Titan Giant Ape and Sky Azure Bull Python without breaking. 29
- Easily blocked Yue Guan's fifth Soul Skill, Martial Soul True Body-enhanced eighth Soul Skill, and Ten Thousand Rays of Light. 80
- Intervened from a distance to shield others during an unseen conflict involving Tang Hao. 201
Rock Spear
Zhongli can create amber spears for direct offense.
- Summons Rock Spears from the sky to strike distant targets. 29
- Condensed an amber spear during his spar with Yue Guan, causing the elder to panic. 80
- Can form a heavy longsword for others; the weapon amplified Chiyu's strength. 63
Martial Soul Disguise
To conform to the Douluo Continent's conventions, Zhongli fabricates the appearance of a nine-ring Martial Soul system.
- His displayed ring configuration is two yellow, two purple, four black, and one red. 29 95
- He uses the false rings as a cover for powers that do not actually require Soul Master techniques. 80 96
- His apparent cultivation was initially estimated at level 97, then later speculated to be level 98 or 99 after he defeated Yue Guan. 18 83
Innate Martial Soul Theory
Zhongli claims an Innate Martial Soul whose body and Martial Soul are integrated, using this explanation to account for his exceptional physique and apparent second awakening. 94 95
- Teaches that Soul Ring absorption limits vary by individual and Martial Soul rather than following a universal rule. 93
- Explains that a body's strength and resistance to a Soul Beast's soul impact determine whether higher-level rings can be absorbed. 93 95
- Advises Ghostly on the conditions for a second Innate Martial Soul awakening. 104
Power of Faith
Zhongli can wield and distribute the Power of Faith.
- Shares it with Innate Sect members to improve cultivation speed, potential, and old injuries. 325
- Uses it despite having no desire to return to godhood himself. 325
- Is recognized as a divine being whose status was shaped by the faith of Liyue's people. 22 287
Knowledge, Statecraft, and Arts
Zhongli possesses broad knowledge of warfare, soul masters, governance, agriculture, manufacturing, commerce, poetry, music, and dance. 3 49 131
- Identified Martial Soul Hall's recruitment strategy and the conflict between the Elder Hall and Pope's Palace. 3
- Advised Qian Renxue that a strong empire should ensure people have food, clothing, and shelter rather than tolerate slavery and abandoned children. 49
- Guided poets to look beyond the accomplishments of past nobles. 73
- Composed Qing Ping Diao, a poem that caused a sensation in Martial Soul City. 284 285
- Agreed to help Moonlight Pavilion students improve their music and dance. 131
