History
From feud to founding Konoha
The Senju and Uchiha fought for roughly a thousand years. Their final war ended when Senju leader Hashirama defeated Uchiha Madara, then sought reconciliation rather than continuing the blood feud. The clans formally allied at a public handshake between their leaders and went on to establish Konoha together 1 14 23.
Peace did not settle every grievance. Hashirama rejected his brother Tobirama’s proposal to eliminate the Uchiha, while veterans of both clans still carried memories of relatives lost in the war. Competition continued within Konoha, particularly over its leadership 14 162 191.
Allies and internal politics
The Uzumaki Clan had been a close Senju ally since the Warring States Period. Its members nevertheless felt slighted when the Senju founded Konoha with the Uchiha before inviting the Uzumaki to join. The Uzumaki instead established their own village; their later ties to Akatsuki Ninja Village created further friction with Tobirama 67 116 375.
As one of Konoha’s founding clans, the Senju benefited from the village’s resources. They were also among the first to participate in—and profit from—Tobirama’s economic reforms 333. Some Senju students who studied in Akatsuki Ninja Village later spoke publicly about its better living conditions, adding to pressure for change in Konoha 236 239.
Marriage alliance and later tensions
An engagement between Uchiha Makoto’s son and Hashirama’s granddaughter Tsunade became the first proposed marriage alliance between the long-feuding clans. The Land of Fire Daimyo publicly announced the union, but Senju opinion was divided: some welcomed its diplomatic value, while others objected to Tsunade marrying into the Uchiha family 252 257 259 265.
After Madara’s death and Tobirama’s succession as Second Hokage, suspicion surrounding the Uchiha unsettled other Konoha clans. Some began seeking ties to Akatsuki as a safeguard against Senju-aligned leadership 410 427. Akatsuki also cultivated covert contacts among ordinary Senju members through intermediaries and financial incentives. Uchiha Makoto planned to use those contacts to spread news of Madara’s funeral to Hashirama despite Tobirama’s efforts to suppress it 454.
