Background / History

Warring States Period and Konoha's founding

The Uchiha and Senju Clans fought a millennium-long blood feud. Although the Uchiha were described as disadvantaged against the Senju, their Sharingan made them a feared force against other ninja clans. 5

Uchiha Madara ultimately led the clan toward reconciliation with Hashirama Senju, promising a village where Uchiha and Senju children would no longer be sent to war. The reconciliation followed Hashirama's attempt to prove his sincerity by stabbing himself with a kunai. 5 9

The alliance was not universally viewed as equal. Later accounts characterize the Uchiha's acceptance of peace as a practical surrender after Madara's defeat and the capture of many clan members by the Senju. 223 Nevertheless, the clan committed its people, wealth, and labor to building Konoha, becoming one of its two founding powers. 243 300

Before Konoha's establishment, Uchiha Makoto attempted to leave the clan and recruit clansmen for his own village. Madara's authority and vision prevailed; no clan member followed Makoto. 5

Loss of influence in Konoha

Despite its founding status, the clan entered Konoha from an inferior position after the war. Madara did not participate in village administration, while the Senju faction retained control of Konoha's core authority. 155

Tobirama Senju formally afforded the Uchiha appropriate treatment but kept them out of the village's decision-making center. He intended to concentrate their power in the Konoha Security Department, making the institution both their exclusive domain and an easily monitored “prison.” 163 167

The clan regarded the Security Department as its rightful entitlement, making proposals to share its positions with other clans contentious even when such concessions could build support for an Uchiha Hokage. 164

Political expansion and reform

The elders sought Uchiha Makoto's assistance in elevating an Uchiha to the Second Hokage. Makoto refused to directly support an Uchiha Hokage, but offered to help the clan expand its influence in Konoha. 162

With Makoto's support, the clan pursued alliances with other Konoha clans, offered benefits in exchange for political support, and built an information network by supplying small clans with copied low-level ninjutsu. 166 281

The clan also developed a generational divide over Tobirama's reforms. Older elders opposed the reforms, while younger members influenced by Makoto and Akatsuki Ninja Village supported them. Makoto later appointed Kagami Uchiha to lead the clan's reform effort. 281 284

Madara's departure

As the contest for the Second Hokage intensified, the clan campaigned publicly for Madara, relying heavily on his reputation as Konoha's second-strongest shinobi after Hashirama. 298

Madara proposed leaving Konoha and building another ninja village, believing Tobirama would eventually destroy the clan. The Great Elder opposed the plan: the Uchiha had heavily invested in Konoha, were prospering there, and would be branded traitors if they departed. 300

When Madara gave the clan an ultimatum at Naka Shrine, no member chose to leave with him. The clan remained in Konoha to protect its families, investments, and standing as a founding clan. 302 340

Nine-Tails crisis

Madara later controlled the Nine-Tails and attacked Konoha, placing Sharingan in the beast's eyes. The incident immediately implicated the Uchiha Clan in the eyes of the village. 391 392

Konoha forces surrounded and sealed the Uchiha compound. The Great Elder ordered the clan to remain inside rather than respond violently, fearing that any action would be treated as proof of rebellion. 392 403

After Madara died in battle against Hashirama, the clan feared a purge and considered fleeing to Akatsuki Ninja Village. Makoto convinced its leaders to remain in Konoha, arguing that flight would confirm the accusation of treason and hand the Senju a complete political victory. 403 404

Despite public suspicion and isolation, the clan later retained the Military Police Force and several departments under Kagami Uchiha's control. 409 413
