Background / History

Warring States Period and Konoha's founding

The Uchiha and Senju Clans fought a millennium-long blood feud. Although the Uchiha were described as disadvantaged against the Senju, their Sharingan made them a feared force against other ninja clans. 5

Uchiha Madara ultimately led the clan toward reconciliation with Hashirama Senju, promising a village where Uchiha and Senju children would no longer be sent to war. The reconciliation followed Hashirama's attempt to prove his sincerity by stabbing himself with a kunai. 5 9

The alliance was not universally viewed as equal. Later accounts characterize the Uchiha's acceptance of peace as a practical surrender after Madara's defeat and the capture of many clan members by the Senju. 223 Nevertheless, the clan committed its people, wealth, and labor to building Konoha, becoming one of its two founding powers. 243 300

Before Konoha's establishment, Uchiha Makoto attempted to leave the clan and recruit clansmen for his own village. Madara's authority and vision prevailed; no clan member followed Makoto. 5

The clan's earlier military employment included pursuing the Chinoike Clan on behalf of the Land of Lightning Daimyo's wife. The persecution ended with the Chinoike being exiled and imprisoned in the Valley of Hell. This episode is later used to illustrate how even powerful bloodline clans could be manipulated through noble patronage. 358

Loss of influence in Konoha

Despite its founding status, the clan entered Konoha from an inferior position after the war. Madara did not participate in village administration, while the Senju faction retained control of Konoha's core authority. 155

Tobirama Senju formally afforded the Uchiha appropriate treatment but kept them out of the village's decision-making center. He intended to concentrate their power in the Konoha Security Department, making the institution both their exclusive domain and an easily monitored “prison.” 163 167

The clan regarded the Security Department as its rightful entitlement, making proposals to share its positions with other clans contentious even when such concessions could build support for an Uchiha Hokage. 164

The elders' approach to appointments and alliances also contributed to their exclusion. They submitted departmental candidate lists consisting entirely of Uchiha and expected other clans, particularly the Hyuga, to approach them first. Tobirama instead cultivated support through discipleships, Anbu recruitment, and appointments involving influential families across Konoha. 163

Political expansion and reform

The elders sought Uchiha Makoto's assistance in elevating an Uchiha to the Second. Makoto refused to directly support an Uchiha Hokage, but offered to help the clan expand its influence in Konoha. 162

With Makoto's support, the clan pursued alliances with other Konoha clans, offered benefits in exchange for political support, and built an information network by supplying small clans with copied low-level ninjutsu. 166 281

The clan also developed a generational divide over Tobirama's reforms. Older elders opposed the reforms, while younger members influenced by Makoto and Akatsuki Ninja Village supported them. Makoto later appointed Kagami Uchiha to lead the clan's reform effort. 281 284

The clan sent outstanding young members to study in Akatsuki Ninja Village, where Makoto personally instructed a selected group in the Will of Light. His cultivation of younger supporters reflected growing distrust of the elders, whose independent dealings with the Land of Fire's higher-ups had been concealed from him. 227 234

After the students returned, the clan organized a public lecture, “What We Saw and Heard in Akatsuki Ninja Village,” near the Hokage Building. Although the elders intended to undermine Tobirama, younger Uchiha speeches advocating change aligned with his reform program. Tobirama used their arguments to acknowledge collective responsibility for Konoha's stagnation and redirect the event in his favor. 236 240

Makoto subsequently made additional assistance conditional on sending more clansmen to study in Akatsuki Ninja Village and promoting members sympathetic to it. When Konoha's revised reform plan passed, he allocated funds and departments to the Uchiha. Under Kagami's reformist leadership, and with Akatsuki's financing and connections, the clan obtained development dividends comparable to those of the Senju. 244 288 333

Madara's departure

As the contest for the Second intensified, the clan campaigned publicly for Madara, relying heavily on his reputation as Konoha's second-strongest shinobi after Hashirama. 298

Madara proposed leaving Konoha and building another ninja village, believing Tobirama would eventually destroy the clan. The Great Elder opposed the plan: the Uchiha had heavily invested in Konoha, were prospering there, and would be branded traitors if they departed. 300

Their investments included land, real estate, businesses, and shops established with Makoto's assistance. These were substantial sources of clan revenue that could not simply accompany the Uchiha to another village. The Great Elder also feared that collective departure would give Hashirama grounds to mobilize Konoha against them. 300

When Madara gave the clan an ultimatum at Naka Shrine, no member chose to leave with him. The clan remained in Konoha to protect its families, investments, and standing as a founding clan. 302 340

Madara's departure intensified disputes between older hardliners and younger members willing to compromise with Tobirama. The Great Elder deployed trusted clansmen to patrol the compound and mediated between the opposing factions. Makoto's renewed promise of support temporarily united them and encouraged hopes that Akatsuki's backing could compensate for Madara's absence. 346

Without Madara, the clan could no longer field a comparable candidate for Second. Makoto encouraged its leaders to preserve their claim to future succession rather than treat defeat in the current election as permanent exclusion. Setsuna and the Great Elder expressed support for Makoto himself becoming Hokage in the future. 354 355

Nine-Tails crisis

Madara later controlled the Nine-Tails and attacked Konoha, placing Sharingan in the beast's eyes. The incident immediately implicated the Uchiha Clan in the eyes of the village. 391 392

Konoha forces surrounded and sealed the Uchiha compound. The Great Elder ordered the clan to remain inside rather than respond violently, fearing that any action would be treated as proof of rebellion. 392 403

After Madara was reported killed in battle against Hashirama, the clan feared a purge and considered fleeing to Akatsuki Ninja Village. Makoto convinced its leaders to remain in Konoha, arguing that flight would confirm the accusation of treason and hand the Senju a complete political victory. 403 404

The attack also disrupted an existing succession arrangement: Tobirama had promised to cultivate Kagami as a prospective Third in order to settle Konoha's internal disputes and secure his own accession as Second. The Great Elder regarded the Nine-Tails incident as having destroyed this favorable situation. 403

Makoto countered Konoha's official account with a competing narrative portraying Madara as a victim of political persecution who had returned to demand justice from Tobirama. He used this information campaign, together with appeals to the clan's pride and founding rights, to discourage flight and maintain its opposition to Senju dominance. 404

Despite public suspicion and isolation, the clan later retained the Military Police Force and several departments under Kagami Uchiha's control. 409 413

Preservation of authority and renewed influence

Before stepping down, Hashirama used his prestige to define the Nine-Tails attack as Madara's personal betrayal and protect the rest of the clan. This prevented Tobirama from using the incident to reclaim the Uchiha-controlled departments. The clan received no punishment and lost none of its institutional authority, although it temporarily withdrew from public prominence. 413

Makoto proposed that the clan remain in Konoha, work to rehabilitate Madara's reputation, use Hashirama's guilt to restrain Tobirama, and secretly support Akatsuki Ninja Village. He disclosed an ambition to annex Konoha, presenting cooperation as a way for the Uchiha to recover their glory. Clan leaders divided between enthusiastic supporters and those, including the Great Elder, concerned about the consequences of war. 405

Makoto did not disclose the plan's most sensitive economic and informational mechanisms to them. He feared that impulsive or boastful clansmen might reveal enough for Tobirama to recognize his preparations in advance. 406

By the time the clan's influence revived, small and medium Konoha clans again sought the Great Elder's favor. They recognized that the Uchiha's internal position and Akatsuki's external backing could together contend with the Hokage, while access to Akatsuki's wealth or opportunities to relocate made Uchiha cooperation valuable. Following Makoto's instructions, the Great Elder responded amiably rather than openly displaying his former arrogance. 448

Akatsuki's growing prestige continued to strengthen the clan's political position. Its prosperity and welfare reputation allowed the Uchiha to present themselves more confidently, and the Great Elder's backing gave him a substantial advantage over Hiruzen Sarutobi in political maneuvering. 471

Organization and Politics

The clan's influence extends beyond policing into departments described as Konoha's newly established economic lifelines. Kagami's control of several such departments gives the Uchiha access to substantial administrative authority and financial flows. 413

Tobirama regards Kagami as capable of thinking beyond clan interests, but also believes that the elders pressure him to use his authority on the clan's behalf even when doing so conflicts with Konoha's interests. 413

The clan's hereditary dōjutsu grants exceptional perception and is central to its military reputation.

Izanagi

Izanagi is an Uchiha forbidden dōjutsu associated with Three-Tomoe Sharingan users.
