Background

Shisui died before the Uchiha Clan massacre. After arriving in Konoha, Shikashuin Kenma encountered the suicidal Shisui, preserved his soul, and made an agreement with him: Shisui would serve Kenma, while willing Uchiha would be taken to the Soul Society for another life. 2

When the massacre occurred, Shisui acted as Kenma's guide for the returning Uchiha Guard Division. He brought the guards to the clan territory, explained Kenma's offer, and urged Fugaku to make a choice that would not repeat the clan's past mistakes. 2

His ability to feel Hunger made him a candidate for Shinigami training. Yanmo subsequently promised him an Asauchi, while Kenma recognized his exceptional talent after he learned Flash Step almost immediately. 2 3

In the Soul Society, Shisui attended Shino Academy while living as a retainer of the Shikokuin Family rather than in the student dormitories. He studied during the day, trained with Uchiha companions at night, and received occasional guidance from Yanmo. 17

His loyalty is active rather than ceremonial. He worries for Kenma after temporarily losing his sight to the borrowed Sharingan, warns Toji Fushiguro against disrespecting Yanmo, and shields Yanmo during the confrontation with Kuchiki Kyoka. 28 88 93

Shisui retains strong feelings toward his former life, particularly regarding Itachi and Konoha. He condemns Itachi for choosing the clan's destruction over reconciliation, but recognizes that Itachi acted from love for Sasuke. By the time he returns to the ninja world, Shisui resolves to act as Kenma's “sharpest blade” even against former acquaintances. 178 179
