Background / History

Fugaku was the head of the Uchiha Clan and father of Itachi and Sasuke. During the Uchiha massacre, he and his wife Mikoto accepted death at Itachi’s hands after entrusting Sasuke to their eldest son. Their souls awakened after the slaughter to find the clan destroyed. Faced with the survivors’ grief and accusations, Fugaku accepted responsibility for Itachi’s actions and knelt before the clan in apology 1.

When Shikashuin Kenma demonstrated overwhelming Spiritual Pressure, Fugaku set aside his earlier resistance and led the entire clan in accepting a contract. The agreement gave the Uchiha a new life in Soul Society in exchange for absolute loyalty; betrayal would bring death, while Kenma’s death would annihilate the contractors as well 2. After arriving in Soul Society, Fugaku and Mikoto accepted that they could not interfere with the living world and renewed the clan’s oath of loyalty 4.

As clan head, Fugaku managed the Uchiha’s settlement, finances, intelligence-gathering, and adaptation to Soul Society. He also deliberately presented the clan’s Sharingan potential to Kenma, securing the latter’s continued investment in Uchiha Zanpakuto, training, and supplies 9 11 12.

Following the wider conflict in the shinobi world, Fugaku assisted Kenma’s forces in collecting the souls of the Four Hokage. Although he remained concerned for Sasuke and the Uchiha’s future, he placed Kenma’s orders above the objections of the Five Kage 210. Tsuru later recommended Fugaku as the guardian of the shinobi world’s Pure Land because of his loyalty, administrative experience, and cautious temperament. He accepted the appointment after securing permission to first conclude the Uchiha Clan’s remaining affairs 212.

Fugaku remained with the clan through the execution of Danzō, Obito, and Itachi, the figures held responsible for the Uchiha massacre. Though he understood the necessity of Itachi’s punishment, his eldest son’s execution remained a source of personal anguish for him 225.

Personality

Fugaku is duty-bound and composed, carrying the burdens of both his clan and family. Even after the massacre, he accepts responsibility for Itachi’s crime rather than deflecting blame onto his son. His authority allows him to stabilize the Uchiha during their transition into Soul Society, though the clan’s resentment toward him persists because of Itachi’s role in the massacre 1 25.

He is intensely loyal to Kenma and views the Uchiha as the master’s “sharpest blade” and “sturdiest shield.” His loyalty is practical as well as emotional: he consistently seeks to demonstrate the clan’s usefulness, protects Kenma’s interests, and accepts administrative duties without hesitation 12 24 56.
