Background / History

Fugaku was the head of the Uchiha Clan and father of Itachi and Sasuke. During the Uchiha massacre, he and his wife Mikoto accepted death at Itachi’s hands after entrusting Sasuke to their eldest son. Their souls awakened after the slaughter to find the clan destroyed. Faced with the survivors’ grief and accusations, Fugaku accepted responsibility for Itachi’s actions and knelt before the clan in apology 1.

When Shikashuin Kenma demonstrated overwhelming Spiritual Pressure, Fugaku set aside his earlier resistance and led the entire clan in accepting a contract. The agreement gave the Uchiha a new life in Soul Society in exchange for absolute loyalty; betrayal would bring death, while Kenma’s death would annihilate the contractors as well 2. After arriving in Soul Society, Fugaku and Mikoto accepted that they could not interfere with the living world and renewed the clan’s oath of loyalty 4.

As clan head, Fugaku managed the Uchiha’s settlement, finances, intelligence-gathering, and adaptation to Soul Society. He also deliberately presented the clan’s Sharingan potential to Kenma, securing the latter’s continued investment in Uchiha Zanpakuto, training, and supplies 9 11 12.

Fugaku later led Uchiha elites alongside Kenma and Shisui into the Pirate World. He admitted that accompanying the expedition also allowed him to escape his guilt over Itachi’s actions 25. Following Kenma’s promotion, Fugaku was entrusted with Second Division work, the Supervisory Squad’s jurisdiction, and the Patrol Corps during Kenma’s wedding preparations 56.

After returning to the shinobi world, Fugaku monitored events in Konoha and gathered intelligence on Akatsuki, the Rinnegan, Kabuto Yakushi, and Sasuke’s movements 178. He ultimately joined Shisui and the restored Uchiha in pursuing revenge against Konoha and Danzo, while remaining conflicted over his sons and his former homeland 179 181 184.

Appearance

Fugaku is depicted as a stern, dignified man with thick eyebrows, proper features, and an unsmiling expression. When operating in the shinobi world, he conceals his identity through a Gigai, black robes, and a pale fox mask 9 185 191.

  • Black hair and thick, pronounced eyebrows 9
  • Scarlet Sharingan, including Mangekyō Sharingan 10 185
  • Often wears a katana/Zanpakutō at his waist 25
  • Uses a black robe and fox mask while concealing himself from Sasuke 185
  • His Gigai permits him to appear visibly before the living 191 192

Personality

Fugaku is duty-bound and composed, carrying the burdens of both his clan and family. Even after the massacre, he accepts responsibility for Itachi’s crime rather than deflecting blame onto his son. His authority allows him to stabilize the Uchiha during their transition into Soul Society, though the clan’s resentment toward him persists because of Itachi’s role in the massacre 1 25.

He is intensely loyal to Kenma and views the Uchiha as the master’s “sharpest blade” and “sturdiest shield.” His loyalty is practical as well as emotional: he consistently seeks to demonstrate the clan’s usefulness, protects Kenma’s interests, and accepts administrative duties without hesitation 12 24 56.

Despite his sternness, Fugaku remains deeply attached to Sasuke and regrets neglecting Itachi. He intervenes to save Sasuke, arranges the transplant of Itachi’s eyes, and attempts to guide his surviving son away from hatred, even while supporting the clan’s vengeance against Konoha 179 185 186.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

Fugaku possesses the Sharingan and has awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. His individual Mangekyō ability is considered too dangerous or special to demonstrate openly; its exact nature is not disclosed 10.

  • Can activate Mangekyō Sharingan in his soul state without the blindness associated with its use in life 10
  • Uses his dōjutsu while disguised in the shinobi world 185
  • His Mangekyō Sharingan is recognized as a significant threat by experienced shinobi such as Tobirama Senju 190

Susanoo

Fugaku can manifest Susanoo, the shared ultimate ability available to Mangekyō Sharingan users. Its initial skeletal manifestation produces immense Spiritual Pressure but quickly exhausts him 10.

  • Demonstrated alongside Shisui to Kenma after the Uchiha’s arrival in Soul Society 10
  • Fought Sasuke using Susanoo during the conflict involving the Shinigami and the ninja world 207
  • Borrowed power from Kenma to maintain the stalemate against Sasuke 207
  • His Susanoo eventually crumbled following Sasuke’s victory 208

Spiritual Pressure and Shinigami Training

As a Shinigami, Fugaku can project Spiritual Pressure powerful enough to subdue Lost Souls. He also possesses enough combat ability to lead Uchiha elites across worlds and act as an authority figure under Kenma 37.

  • Introduced himself to the Pirate World’s Lost Souls as “for now, a Shinigami” 37
  • Restrained a large group of Lost Souls through Spiritual Pressure while deliberately holding back 37
  • Possesses a Zanpakutō and has trained alongside the Uchiha in Soul Society 25
  • Can receive temporary Spiritual Pressure or the projected consciousness of Kenma through their contract connection when necessary 30 207

Leadership and Intelligence Work

Fugaku’s experience as clan head translates directly into administrative and intelligence responsibilities. He organizes Uchiha personnel, assigns reconnaissance missions, monitors strategic targets, and manages the clan’s relations with Kenma 9 24 56.

  • Personally managed the clan’s finances during its initial settlement in Soul Society 9
  • Directed the Uchiha’s intelligence-gathering on Soul Society and the shinobi world 9 178
  • Chose guard personnel for Kenma’s interworld expedition 24
  • Assigned Tekka to monitor the Masked Man and deployed squads to observe the Five Great Ninja Villages 184
  • Placed a Ghost Path on Jiraiya to facilitate retrieval of his soul 181

Relationships

  • Uchiha Mikoto — wife and fellow Uchiha survivor; they jointly accepted the clan’s new life in Soul Society and later served Kenma together 1 4 56.
  • Uchiha Itachi — eldest son and perpetrator of the Uchiha massacre. Fugaku accepts blame for failing him, but condemns Itachi’s actions and allows Mikoto to take his sealed soul away 1 179.
  • Uchiha Sasuke — younger son and Fugaku’s remaining hope for the Uchiha bloodline. Fugaku rescues him, offers him Itachi’s eyes, and tries to steer him away from hatred 185 186 187.
  • Uchiha Shisui — trusted clansman and partner in leading the restored Uchiha. They conduct reconnaissance, pursue Kabuto and the Masked Man, and coordinate the clan’s revenge operations 178 184 186.
  • Shikashuin Kenma — Fugaku’s master and the Uchiha Clan’s contractor. Fugaku pledges absolute loyalty, serves as Kenma’s administrator, and receives praise for occupying Sasuke during battle 2 56 208.
  • Uchiha Setsuna — elder and collaborator in the Uchiha’s revenge campaign; together with Fugaku and Shisui, he confronts Danzo and plans later operations 184 185.
  • Danzō Shimura — one of the Uchiha Clan’s principal targets for revenge. Fugaku witnesses his soul being sealed by Shisui after the confrontation with Sasuke 183 184.
  • Orochimaru — revived as part of Fugaku’s plan to obtain powerful souls and undo the Reaper Death Seal on Orochimaru’s arms 188 189.
