Background / History

Yoruichi is the head of the Shihōin Family, a Great Noble house, and the daughter of the ailing former head, Shihōin Chunyan. Chunyan arranged her engagement to Shikokuin Yanmo/Kenma partly because he believed Yanmo’s serious, restrained temperament could curb Yoruichi’s wild and unrestrained behavior. Yoruichi initially resented the arrangement and intended to divorce him when possible. 6 8

As Chunyan’s health declined, he transferred authority over the Second Division and family affairs to Yoruichi. While she held the family headship and captaincy, Yanmo received control of the family’s finances and intelligence network. 7 18

Her relationship with Yanmo changed gradually from open hostility and mutual needling to trust and marriage. After initially admitting defeat to secure the release of Kisuke Urahara and Saeaya, she later married Yanmo. 48 60 64
