Background / History

Kagome is a modern-era student from a shrine family. Before being drawn through the Well of Bone-Eating into the Warring States period, she regarded her grandfather's talk of talismans and monsters as unproven superstition; encountering genuine magic and Youkai changed that immediately 301 308.

She initially travels with Little Dog after becoming entangled in the scattered Sacred Jewel fragments. Though outwardly brave after encounters with Yura of the Hair and Sesshomaru, she is uneasy about the danger and invites Lin Yun and Cow Girl to accompany the journey. Lin Yun's decision to return Tetsusaiga to Little Dog earns her trust 306.

Kagome later merges with Midoriko's remnant soul. The fusion dramatically raises her attributes and awakens her Purification Miko class early, giving her a more developed understanding of powers she would otherwise have learned only gradually 346 347. Kikyo's remnant soul also exists within her; it briefly awakens independently, kills Guilitao with demon-breaking power, and survives after leaping from a cliff in a weakened state 430.

Despite her connections to both Midoriko and Kikyo, Kagome insists that she is neither of them: she is Kagome, and she refuses to reduce herself to a reincarnation or vessel 348.

Her compassion also creates hesitation when battles involve humans rather than Youkai. She is willing to fight demons, but she is troubled by the prospect of killing ordinary soldiers who are merely following orders 534 535.

Although often naive and self-conscious, Kagome becomes far more cautious and analytical under Lin Yun's influence.
