Background and History
Hachinosu was a gathering place for pirates long before Leon arrived. Its central landmark is a giant stone skull. A widely believed account credits Rocks D. Gibeck with establishing its reputation; after the Rocks Pirates fell, his former subordinate Ochoku took control. Ochoku preferred to guard the island rather than compete with the New World’s rising powers 319.
Leon chose Hachinosu as a base for the Godzilla Pirates. His crew defeated Ochoku’s forces, and Ochoku’s palace became a temporary infirmary for the wounded. Leon then began rebuilding the island with help from the Revolutionary Army and Fish-Men, leaving Issho in charge when he departed 319 322 324 326.
Landmarks and Infrastructure
- Stone skull — Hachinosu’s central landmark; it remained in place during the island’s later redevelopment 319 411.
- Sea Train — Built under Tom’s direction, its lines connect Hachinosu with surrounding islands and carry supplies, materials, and people 324 434.
- Hundred Battles Arena — Hosts gladiator matches, including Cyrus’s and Franky’s consecutive-win runs 427.
- Casino — A large establishment with cash reserves substantial enough for Leon to offer a payment of 100 billion Beli there 440.
- Medical facilities — Hachinosu’s medical care is known well beyond the island; patients travel there from the first half of the Grand Line 498.
Crocodile later expanded Hachinosu by bringing in sand. Its defenses also grew: approaching pirates observed numerous large-caliber cannons and described the island as a war fortress 416 434.
Laws and Community
- Leon made “Equality for All” island law. Fish-Men live and work alongside humans, and visitors are told that the island treats other races equally as well 425 434.
- Human trafficking is forbidden, with execution specified as the penalty 434.
- Pirates may enter and leave freely if they obey local rules. A Fish-Man maritime guard patrols the waters, while the Sea Patrol helps maintain order ashore 446 451 557.
- The first group of Fish-Men settlers arrived from Fish-Man Island under Haladol’s leadership 425.
- According to Domino’s investigation, people convicted under island law are sent to a secret location for “labor reform” 487.
Major Events
- Threat from Impel Down escapees — Leon sought Marine cooperation but insisted that fighting must not spill onto Hachinosu. In his absence, Issho assembled the island’s strongest defenders 447 476.
- Attack above the island — When Garp’s attack caused alarm across Hachinosu, Smoothie ordered the Enforcement Department and Maritime Guard to restore order. Issho avoided large-scale attacks because the island lay below the battlefield 481.
- Later defense — Smoothie reported the capture of Guernica and others attempting to cause trouble on Hachinosu before Issho departed for a larger battle 557.
Trivia
- Robin cites a theory that the name Hachinosu comes from its pirates swarming out against enemies like bees from a hive. Ochoku’s forces respond in just that fashion when the Godzilla Pirates arrive 319.
