Background / History
The Emerald Duke was Poldoria Kingdom's only Grand Duke, though his fief lay outside the kingdom's borders. His territory stood at the junction of Bema Duchy, the Winter Kingdom, and Taqulin, earning him the title “Duke of the Enclave.” Despite its exposed position, the enclave maintained peaceful relations, free movement, and trade with all three neighboring powers. 27
Before personally entering the story, he sold a Level 4 sailing warship at auction and served as a key connector among regional powers. He later made a closer alliance with Bema Duchy, whose Anemone Prince considered him a powerful and dependable ally. 27 115 116
During the struggle for Silver Bay, the Duke approached Ian Calvender under the pretense of a banquet, addressed him as “nephew,” and revealed his extensive knowledge of the competing factions. He and Ian formed an alliance, exchanged deceptive magical contracts to mislead Diallo, and coordinated with the Silver Star Merchant Alliance and the Azores City-State. 176 177 178 179
The Duke eventually made Silver Bay a central part of his power base. As Ian's influence grew, he shifted from acting as an equal political partner to openly supporting Ian's expansion, supplying personnel, ships, mounts, troops, and commercial connections. 241 245 309 333
When plague and undead corruption spread through Emerald Territory, he returned with Ian to protect his family and restore Emerald City. He organized purification operations, promoted the Silver Hand, and turned the demand for healing and Purification Incantations into a major source of income. 315 323
Facing escalating conflicts between major powers and the lack of a high-sequence Transcendent within his own duchy, the Duke chose to join Calvinde for his family's long-term security. Ian absorbed the duchy's New Continent territories and armies while allowing the Duke to retain a permanently hereditary ducal title, his private assets, and noble benefits. 419 420
Appearance
The Emerald Duke initially appears physically unremarkable: a short, stout man whose presence contrasts sharply with his political reach and military strength. He is later described as refined, often wearing a faint, composed smile. 176 213
- Short and stout build. 176
- Refined demeanor and calm smile. 213
- Commands an imposing fleet and griffin riders despite deliberately concealing much of his strength. 176 178
Personality
The Duke is calculating, patient, and highly pragmatic. He relies on a broad network of friends and allies rather than purely on formal intelligence channels, using favors, contracts, and mutual interests to secure long-term advantages. 177 324
He is also unusually willing to invest in Ian once he recognizes Ian's potential. His support is rarely sentimental: he supplies resources, troops, ships, and connections because he believes Ian's success will also strengthen his own position. 216 232 241
Despite his political sophistication and luxurious habits, the Duke is deeply concerned for his family and the territory he spent years building. His decision to join Calvinde comes from a sober assessment of the danger facing his house rather than a lack of attachment to his former power. 214 315 419

- His warships use special-alloy hulls, powerful propulsion, and advanced design concepts. 176

- Entrusts capable non-Transcendents with important logistical and personnel-management roles. 207
- Converted purification services and Purification Incantations into a profitable operation during the plague crisis. 323
