History
Founding and decline
Great Qi was founded by Emperor Taizu, Qi Hantian. To protect the Qi family's rule, Taizu decreed that institutions such as the Temple, Demon Suppression Department, and Demon Slayers could not intervene in internal Qi-family succession struggles unless outside forces interfered. 511
The dynasty was once powerful enough that surrounding nations submitted to it, while even the Dao Alliance showed it respect. Its later decline was attributed by Great Qi's own defenders to the sudden disappearance of Taizu roughly a thousand years earlier. 669
By the later period, Great Qi faced internal instability, demon threats, ambitious regional powers, and foreign factions seeking to exploit its weakening position. 472 665
Fall of the Qi imperial house
During Luo Yi's conflict with the Imperial Court, he killed Old Man Qi, the imperial-mausoleum guardian and Great Qi's foremost named expert, in the Capital. The battle devastated much of the city, while the Incense Wish Power released after Old Man Qi's death fell as golden rain that healed injured residents. 575
Qi Tongtian fled the Imperial Palace after witnessing Old Man Qi's defeat. Luo Yi subsequently committed regicide and executed Qi-family experts, ending the Qi house's effective control of the dynasty. 575 580
Rather than directly managing every affair of state, Luo Yi retained the Faceless God to manage the Temple and later entrusted court administration to Yan Dong and others. 576 581
Government and institutions
- Temple — Great Qi's central institution for collecting and allocating Incense Wish Power. It governs the Demon Suppression Department, Government Office, and Demon Slayers, making it a principal force for maintaining order. 472
- Demon Suppression Department — A martial organization responsible for local defense, demon suppression, and regional security. Its commanders and inspectors operate across the provinces. 447 762
- Golden Body Divine Appearances — Incense Wish Power-based defenders used by Great Qi's strongest martial artists. The dynasty once had thirteen Golden Body Realm deities in slumber, while smaller Divine Appearances guarded regions outside the Capital. 472 665
- Incense Wish Power — A core resource of imperial rule, gathered through the Temple and used to sustain Yin Spirits and Golden Body Divine Appearances. Luo Yi noted that a Golden Body dependent on Great Qi's Incense Wish Power would weaken if the dynasty perished. 472 496
- Imperial succession — Before the fall of the Qi house, the throne was intended to remain within the Qi family, with internal succession settled without intervention from Great Qi's martial institutions. 511
Major conflicts
Qingqiu fox clan crisis
The Qingqiu fox clan attempted to impose a division of authority: Great Qi would govern the Nine Provinces and Four Seas, while Qingqiu would control the Imperial Court and place its patriarch's statue atop the Temple. 667
Great Qi's Divine General refused to accept the proposal. The conflict escalated when Fufeng Zhenren of the Dao Alliance demanded joint governance and ordered Qingqiu to attack Great Qi martial artists after its refusal. 670
Great Qi's defenders resisted despite being outnumbered by Qingqiu's Golden Body-level forces. Luo Yi later killed Qingqiu foxes and established a boundary marker from their remains, reinforcing Great Qi's territorial claim. 669 675
Heavenly Secrets Pavilion conflict
The Qi Family's arrival to reinforce Great Qi's formations drew the attention of the Heavenly Secrets Pavilion, which held longstanding grievances against the dynasty. 762 764
Great Qi and the Qi Family formalized an alliance against the Heavenly Secrets Pavilion and other threats. Following the ensuing battle, Luo Yi directed the removal of the Temple's academies and the restructuring of Great Qi's cultivation system. 766 772
Reforms and defenses
Luo Yi ordered Great Qi to dismantle the Temple's academies, establish cultivation grounds throughout the Nine Provinces, reduce aristocratic families' influence, and eliminate secular channels for collecting Incense Wish Power. 772
The Qi Family was tasked with strengthening Great Qi's defensive formations. Their formations were expected to resist ordinary Refining Void opponents for several days if adequately supplied with resources. 681 685
By the time of the Southwest Nine Provinces' later development:
- Rune-inscribed refined-iron pillars formed light barriers isolating Great Qi territory from the Ten Thousand Demon Lair. 839
- Aristocratic clans had been abolished and Martial Academies opened to accept students regardless of background. 839
- Successful Martial Academy candidates became martial scholars with official status, tax exemptions for their households, and monthly stipends from the Demon Suppression Department and Government Office. 839
