Background

Gion entered the Marine Academy at Marineford through a recommendation from Vice Admiral Tsuru. She posted exceptional academic and general-course results, but performed poorly with rifles. During a shooting assessment, Wood ranked above her despite both missing every shot; his bullets at least struck Gion's target, while hers went wide. Gion irrationally blamed him for the result and began treating him as a rival. 17

When Wood attempted to give up his fourth-place result to settle the dispute, the instructor praised his supposed humility instead. Humiliated further, Gion vowed to surpass him through her own efforts and “remember” the grudge. 18 Her refusal to cooperate with Wood continued into cannon training, where the instructor forced them to work as a pair. 22 23

After graduation, Gion advanced from Sergeant to Captain in only half a year. She consistently requested further assignments rather than leave and earned Sengoku's approval through her competence, discipline, and willingness to handle difficult missions. 40

Gion is intensely competitive, proud, and unwilling to accept being judged inferior—particularly by Wood. Her initial grudge began over an insignificant academy ranking, but it pushed her to train relentlessly rather than rely on her connection to Tsuru. 17 18 21
