Background / History
Doflamingo comes from the Donquixote family, formerly World Nobles. His younger brother Rosinante remembers their loss of noble status and the retaliation they suffered from commoners. As a child, Doflamingo personally shot their father and later sent his head to Mary Geoise 203 205 219.
Despite losing his Celestial Dragon status, Doflamingo retains connections within the World Government. These ties help establish his underworld influence and give him leverage when arranging transactions or shifting blame onto others 205 208.
He eventually holds both the Shichibukai title and Dressrosa’s throne. His political position, World Government connections, and dealings with the Four Emperors make him difficult to challenge, even for opponents who know about his crimes 585 587 588.
Appearance
- Pink feather coat — contains at least one spare pair of sunglasses 217.
- Sunglasses — he replaces a shattered pair during the Minion Island fight without allowing Wood to see his eyes 213 217.
- Long legs — used for kicks and Armament Haki-coated defenses 213.
- Swaggering, outward-turned gait — emphasized when he approaches Aokiji at Dressrosa’s bay 586.
Personality
Doflamingo combines ambition, intelligence, charisma, and a strong sense of superiority. Wood acknowledges his talent for recruiting useful people and developing long-term ventures rather than simply chasing the One Piece. His pride nevertheless leads him to underestimate unfamiliar opponents, notably Wood during their first confrontation and the Straw Hats at Dressrosa 210 579 590.
He openly shares important plans with trusted executives and calls them his family. That attachment has limits: he admits that his own survival outweighs their lives, treats them as valuable tools, and ultimately abandons them when escaping Dressrosa. While senior executives admire him, some other members remain loyal primarily because they fear him 203 219 600 601.
Betrayal provokes intense anger, but Doflamingo can negotiate when force fails. Against Wood, he shifts from direct combat to defense and threats against others. His ability to identify an opponent’s attachments makes hostage-taking a recurring fallback strategy 218 220 589 599.
Abilities & Skills
String-String Fruit
Doflamingo creates and manipulates extremely fine threads for cutting, control, defense, and movement. His development of an otherwise ordinary Paramecia gives it a broad range of combat applications 216 591.
- Five-Color String — a claw-like sweep of five threads; inflicts five deep wounds on Law despite his sword defense 590.
- Foot Shave String — a sweeping kick that launches a cutting thread capable of slicing through hard ground 209.
- Bullet — a projectile technique used against the World Government delegation at Minion Island 208.
- Overheat Jump Whip — combines dozens of threads into a thick, long-range attack that cuts through large trees and sends Wood flying tens of kilometers 212.
- Descent Outlaw Line — a lethal piercing attack also used by his string clone 211.
- Limit: the fruit is not a Logia and does not grant elementalization 216 599.
Birdcage
Birdcage surrounds an island with exceptionally resilient, razor-sharp threads. It traps inhabitants, blocks communications, and steadily contracts toward the center 208 218 596.
- Cuts through vegetation, rocks, buildings, and flesh as it shrinks 208 218.
- Does not distinguish between allies and enemies, placing Donquixote Family members at risk alongside his opponents 218.
- Its threads are described as resisting even Admiral-level Armament Haki and Sea Prism Stone 596.
- Consumes substantial stamina; Doflamingo cannot control its contraction timing 218 596.
- Normally ends when he cancels it or loses consciousness. Wood later lifts the Dressrosa Birdcage before pursuing him 218 600.
String Clones and Puppet Control
- Shadow Rider Line — forms a life-sized string duplicate with Doflamingo’s appearance and abilities. He uses it to attack Wood from behind and confuse multiple opponents 211 591.
- Clone resilience — damage to the duplicate does not injure Doflamingo, but Wood destroys it after identifying its movements with Observation Haki 212.
- Parasitic Line / Puppet Strings — controls other people’s movements. He uses it to make enemies attack one another and, at Marineford, to pull Crocodile away from Wood’s slash 465 591.
- Limit: Crocodile escapes puppet control by elementalizing his body 465.
Defense and Emergency Suturing
- Spider’s Nest — a defensive web whose sharp threads can also cut an enemy attempting to rush through it 215.
- Spider Web Line — another defensive application used during the fight against Law, Zoro, Sanji, and Monet 591.
- Self-suturing — stitches wounds closed, including severe injuries to his limbs and back, to limit bleeding and continue fighting 216 217.
- Limit: suturing temporarily stabilizes injuries rather than fully healing them; continued blood loss remains dangerous 217.
Awakened Techniques
Awakening allows Doflamingo to turn surrounding material into threads instead of relying solely on threads produced by his body 216 217.
- Terrain conversion — transforms ground, vegetation, and later buildings into thread-based weapons 217 599.
- Shield White Line — creates dense thread barriers; he also wraps himself in a defensive sphere during negotiations with Wood 217 218.
- Thread cocoon — attempts to envelop Wood, who cuts through it before it can fully form 217.
- Great Wave White Line — converts the surroundings into a massive wave of attacking threads 599.
- 16 Divine Bullet Barrage: Divine Punishment — his strongest awakened attack, consisting of sixteen Armament Haki-coated thread spears striking from multiple directions 600.
- Limits: newly awakened threads initially cannot react quickly enough to Wood’s movements. His final attack is also less powerful over the open sea than on land 217 600.
Haki
Doflamingo possesses all three types of Haki and is described as a top-tier Shichibukai 464.
- Armament Haki — strengthens his limbs and threads. During their early fight, his proficiency substantially exceeds Wood’s 211 213 215.
- Observation Haki — detects attacks and opponents even when visibility is obscured by dust 213 465.
- Conqueror’s Haki — intimidates weaker opponents but fails to deter Wood. Conqueror’s Haki infusion is not demonstrated 213.
Aerial Mobility
Sky Path / Sky Line attaches nearly invisible threads to clouds, allowing high-speed travel through the air 209 600.
- Functions independently of the Rokushiki technique Geppo 209.
- Uses relatively little power compared with Geppo, making it suitable for his escape from Dressrosa 600.
Brokerage and Political Manipulation
- Uses World Government contacts to lend credibility to his version of events 205.
- Plants Vergo within the Marines, enabling an attack on the World Government’s forces from inside their ranks 208 209.
- Invokes Dressrosa’s status as a World Government member nation to obtain Marine protection 585.
- Attempts to acquire Wood’s enterprise by recruiting Robin rather than attacking its fortified territory directly 331.
- Commissions Caesar to research Wood’s unusual powers 609.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Spare sunglasses — carried inside his feather coat and used after Wood breaks his original pair 217.
- Sea Prism Stone bullet — prepared for executing an exhausted Luffy before Wood interrupts 598.
- Mera Mera no Mi — used as the prize and bait for Dressrosa’s Colosseum tournament; Diamante is assigned to prevent outsiders from easily claiming it 589.
Relationships
- Wood — long-standing enemy and underworld rival. Their first major clash occurs at Minion Island; temporary cooperation does not end their feud, and Wood ultimately kills him 210 221 323 600.
- Donquixote Rosinante / Corazon — younger brother and second-generation Heart executive. Rosinante infiltrates the family for the Marines; Doflamingo attacks him after discovering his betrayal, but Wood intervenes 203 214 215.
- Trafalgar Law — raised within the Donquixote Family and later its enemy. After Law eats the Ope Ope no Mi, Doflamingo accepts him in the Minion Island settlement; Law eventually returns seeking revenge 222 580 590.
- Vergo — trusted executive, first-generation Corazon, and Marine infiltrator. He betrays government forces on Doflamingo’s orders and later attempts to kill Rosinante 209 222.
- Diez Barrels — seller of the Ope Ope no Mi whom Doflamingo plans to double-cross. Doflamingo kills him after discovering Wood’s involvement 203 210.
- Kaido and Big Mom — powerful figures whose demands constrain his actions. Their pressure leads him to provoke Wood, while Caesar’s importance makes him fear further offending them 572 585.
- Caesar — research and business partner rather than a subordinate. He abandons Doflamingo for Wood’s greater protection and financial support 591 609.
- Monet — apparently trusted family member whose betrayal particularly shocks him. She reveals that her years of service were not motivated by admiration for him 591.
- Nico Robin — Wood’s second-in-command. Believing Wood dead, Doflamingo offers her a position second only to himself to gain control of Wood’s business 331.
- Aokiji / Kuzan — hostile former Admiral working for Wood. Doflamingo tries to recruit him, then fights him with the Donquixote Family to prevent his investigation of Dressrosa 586 587.
- Fujitora — Admiral dispatched under political pressure to protect Dressrosa. Doflamingo attempts to use him against Law’s allies, then becomes furious when he permits Caesar and Monet to leave with Aokiji 585 591 592.
- Monkey D. Luffy — opponent during Dressrosa’s collapse. Doflamingo takes him hostage after their battle and releases him in exchange for an opportunity to escape 598 599 600.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Minion Island and the Ope Ope no Mi Deal
As intermediary between Diez Barrels and the World Government, Doflamingo plans to steal both the Ope Ope no Mi and its payment. The fruit’s ability to grant immortality at the user’s expense motivates his interest. Sengoku sends Wood to stop the scheme using intelligence supplied by Corazon 203.
The transaction collapses when Barrels throws an empty briefcase to the government delegation. Doflamingo attacks and activates Birdcage to prevent the supposed vice-captain from escaping with the fruit. While Pica blocks government forces and Vergo betrays them, Doflamingo pursues the carrier—only to discover that he is Wood 208 209 210.
During the ensuing battle, Doflamingo discovers Corazon’s betrayal and Law’s consumption of the fruit. Wood prevents him from killing Corazon and inflicts injuries severe enough to trigger his awakening. Unable to secure a direct victory, Doflamingo uses the shrinking Birdcage as leverage in negotiations 213 214 215 217 218.
Doflamingo and Wood temporarily cooperate to defeat the remaining government personnel. Their settlement leaves Law with Doflamingo, while Wood takes Corazon and the payment. Doflamingo deactivates Birdcage rather than renew the fight 220 221 222.
Underworld Rivalry
After Minion Island, Doflamingo deliberately spreads news that draws hostile pirate crews toward Wood. Over the following years, Wood overtakes him in wealth, influence, and strength, displacing his position as the underworld’s leading Joker 225 323.
At Big Mom’s tea party, Doflamingo questions why Wood does not pay protection dues to the Four Emperors, attempting to turn other underworld figures against him. Later, believing Wood dead, he approaches Robin with a recruitment offer designed to absorb Wood’s enterprise 327 331.
Marineford
Doflamingo fights alongside Crocodile against Wood after Moria’s swift defeat exposes the danger Wood presents. He uses Puppet Strings to save Crocodile from a powerful slash, explaining that keeping another opponent alive improves his own chances of survival 465.
Dressrosa’s Collapse
Under pressure from Kaido and Big Mom, Doflamingo has Morgans label Wood one of the Four Emperors. Wood responds by sending Aokiji to investigate Dressrosa. Anticipating an attack, Doflamingo prepares several contingencies, promotes the Mera Mera no Mi tournament, and secures Marine assistance through his royal status 572 585 589.
His position deteriorates as Caesar and Monet switch sides, the Straw Hats and Law attack, and the Revolutionary Army targets his factories and palace. When the citizens transformed into toys are restored and his crimes exposed, he deploys Birdcage across Dressrosa 591 595 596.
Doflamingo counters Law’s Gamma Knife and continues fighting Luffy’s Gear Fourth. After Luffy becomes exhausted, he prepares an execution, but Wood arrives with his allies. His awakened attack fails, and he takes Luffy hostage to demand their withdrawal and Caesar’s return 598 599.
Final Escape and Death
Wood offers Doflamingo a ten-minute head start in exchange for releasing Luffy. Doflamingo accepts and flees through the sky, abandoning his family and kingdom 599 600.
Wood catches him over the sea. Doflamingo launches his strongest awakened technique, but Wood counters with Hundred Demons Sword Style Secret Art: Fire Element Two Sword Style — Kagutsuchi, killing him in one slash. With their leader dead and executives defeated, the Donquixote Family effectively collapses 600.

Trivia
- Doflamingo initially enjoys the Joker nickname, but resents it once underworld comparisons reduce him to the “Jack” beneath Wood’s “King” 323.
- His stated greatest regrets are losing his Celestial Dragon status through his father’s decision and offending Wood more than a decade earlier 323.
- Although the Straw Hats receive public credit for his defeat, informed major powers know Wood was responsible for his final annihilation 668.
