Background / History

Illya initially believed herself to be an ordinary child, despite possessing an absurd quantity of magical energy. Her System rewards steadily amplified both her mana and body before she understood magecraft, making her powerful enough to knock Tohsaka Rin unconscious in a single strike. 5 7

Her early System tasks were frequently humiliating rather than useful. After gaining one centimeter in height, she accepted a task to publicly reject a fabricated confession from her brother Shirou in exchange for a random Magical Girl Transformation Card. Her determination to become a Magical Girl outweighed her embarrassment, earning her Takamachi Nanoha’s Transformation Card and provoking Sella into pursuing Shirou. 2

After becoming Ruby’s Master, Illya joined Miyu, Rin, Luvia, and Chu Chen in recovering Class Cards from the Mirror World. Initially frightened by the danger of facing Heroic Spirits, she ultimately refused to leave Miyu to fight alone and became a reliable combat partner, drawing enemies’ attention and coordinating attacks in battle. 9 14 23

Her use of the Archer Class Card against Berserker caused Kuro—her sealed original consciousness—to separate from her body. Kuro initially resented Illya’s peaceful life and considered killing her, but Chu Chen persuaded her to survive as an independent person instead. 27 28

Although she initially lacks confidence in life-or-death battles, Illya refuses to abandon Miyu. Her fear of Class Card recovery does not overcome her belief that friends should not face danger alone. 23

She is also competitive and easily irritated when others threaten to take her victories, attention, or perceived closeness with Chu Chen. Her reaction to Kuro’s “love token” and Sitonai’s attempt to attack Gilgamesh reflects this immaturity. 154 163
