Sato was studying in Gan Country when the nuclear strikes following the Razor Raid devastated the Fourth Defense Line Archipelago. Being abroad spared him the worst pollution, which left many inhabitants unable to establish effective neural synchronization with mechas 63.

He participated in the selection for Xing Tian's original pilots but scored slightly below Chen Weimin and Yan Fei. He continued to admire both men and later explained that pilot selection was open to Watcher Alliance members across national boundaries 65.

After Sato lost all his family members, Yuan Zhen entrusted Douzi to him. Yuan considered him a suitable adopter because his abilities as a pilot offered protection and because he needed an emotional anchor.
