Background / History

General Chen was one of Xing Tian's first pilots. His partner and best friend, Yan Fei, died during their service; Chen later recalled still sensing Yan Fei's presence through Xing Tian's neural synchronization until he returned the mech to base. The experience led him to stop piloting mechs and to resist sending Xing Tian into battle again. 47

He personally recruited Bai Ying into Obsidian Sky and assessed her combat ability. Despite her high evaluation, he initially barred her from deployment because her synchronization rate with Xing Tian was too low for safe control. 1

Chen is also Bai Ying's father. A photograph kept by both depicts Chen, Bai Ying, and her mother on Bai Ying's ninth birthday; on the anniversary of her mother's death, Chen attempts to speak with Bai Ying but ultimately allows her space to grieve. 50
