Background / History
General Chen was one of Xing Tian's first pilots. His partner and best friend, Yan Fei, died during their service; Chen later recalled still sensing Yan Fei's presence through Xing Tian's neural synchronization until he returned the mech to base. The experience led him to stop piloting mechs and to resist sending Xing Tian into battle again. 47
He personally recruited Bai Ying into Obsidian Sky and assessed her combat ability. Despite her high evaluation, he initially barred her from deployment because her synchronization rate with Xing Tian was too low for safe control. 1
Chen is also Bai Ying's father. A photograph kept by both depicts Chen, Bai Ying, and her mother on Bai Ying's ninth birthday; on the anniversary of her mother's death, Chen attempts to speak with Bai Ying but ultimately allows her space to grieve. 50
Personality
Chen remains composed under provocation. When Bai Ying grabs his collar during their argument over piloting Xing Tian, he calmly removes her hand and explains the danger rather than retaliating. 1
He prioritizes civilian survival over property and financial loss. During the assault on Obsidian Sky, he orders mechs to clear monsters within the high walls and commits resources to keeping Xing Tian operational despite the base's limited funds. 5 14
Order and accountability are central to his command style. He disciplines Bai Ying for disobeying orders, yet recognizes the value of her judgment and repeatedly supports her and Xing Tian when others seek to control or remove them. 6 13 47

- Ordered Xing Tian's emergency reassembly and placed the base on Level Two combat readiness after the United Front's fall. 13

Mecha Piloting and Technical Knowledge

Story Role / Major Arcs
Defense of Obsidian Sky
When monsters strike Obsidian Sky, Chen mobilizes every available defense and ultimately permits Bai Ying to deploy in Xing Tian because she is the base's only available mech pilot. 1 He orders Bai Ying to evacuate when a Level 4 monster appears, but Xing Tian autonomously removes her from the cockpit and advances toward the coast. 3
Xing Tian's Repair and the Black Cube
After Xing Tian's apparent destruction, Chen rejects the idea of abandoning the old mech, arguing that courage, persistence, and faith—not merely equipment—create heroes. He orders Lao Yu to begin repairs. 5 6
When the black cube merges with Xing Tian's remains, Chen orders the power core separated and the mech preserved. He later personally oversees the attempted ignition of the core, which triggers an unknown system intrusion. 6 7
Conflict with Omega
Chen refuses Dr. Chris's demand to take Xing Tian and Bai Ying to Omega headquarters for research, despite Omega's claimed ownership rights over unknown technologies and samples. 13
Facing Obsidian Sky's financial crisis, he commits three months of funding to preorder worn third-generation parts from the Silent Graveyard, judging survival in the present more important than a future the base may not live to see. 14
Recognition of Xing Tian
At the Watcher Alliance conference, Chen publicly testifies for Xing Tian's value and character, invoking his history with Yan Fei and Xing Tian's actions in defending Obsidian Sky and the Silent Graveyard operation. His statement sways the assembled commanders toward supporting Xing Tian. 47
He later announces Xing Tian's official return and integration into the Obsidian Sky Mobile Armor Legion as a True Pilot. 49
