Background / History

The Donquixote Family ruled Dressrosa before leaving for Mary Geoise roughly 800 years ago. The Riku Family succeeded them. An early King Riku freed the Tontatta Tribe from exploitation and permitted its members to take daily necessities without labor, establishing a bond that endured for eight centuries. Under the Riku kings, Dressrosa was not especially wealthy, but it was peaceful and aided neighboring nations in need 577 588 589.

Ten years before the Straw Hats’ arrival, Doflamingo demanded that King Riku either abdicate or pay him 10 billion Beli before dawn. Riku sought the money from citizens who trusted him. Doflamingo then used his String-String Fruit power to make Riku attack those citizens, defeated the royal army, and presented himself as the country’s savior. The public came to regard Riku as a tyrant, allowing Doflamingo to take the throne 590.

Doflamingo’s apparent prosperity concealed forced labor and erased lives. Sugar turned people into toys, causing others to forget them; toys were exploited underground, while hundreds of Tontatta were held by the Donquixote Family. Princess Viola joined Doflamingo’s crew under the name Violet as the price of keeping her father, King Riku, alive 589 590 605.

Places

  • Corrida Colosseum — site of the gladiatorial tournament whose Diamond Fruit prize drew rival groups to Dressrosa. A statue there preserved Kyros’s legend even after Sugar’s power erased memories of him 495 524.
  • Royal Palace — Doflamingo’s seat of power and the target of the Straw Hats’ assault. Pica later moved it toward the Flower Field 611 631.
  • Flower Field — gathering place for Kyros, the Tontatta, and their allies during preparations to overthrow Doflamingo 562 598.
  • Toy House and underground Factory — connected to the exploitation of people turned into toys and the Tontatta Tribe 598 605.
  • Green Bit bridge — the route across Dressrosa used by Law’s group to reach Green Bit; Law says Green Bit cannot be reached by ship 503.
  • Central Street — a major battlefield during Doflamingo’s fight with Luffy and the contraction of the Birdcage 718 725.

Dressrosa Conflict

Doflamingo advertised the Diamond Fruit as a tournament prize to draw Fire Fist Ace to Dressrosa and, through Ace, lure Luffy. He also falsely announced his resignation as both king and Shichibukai, deceiving Law and the Straw Hats 495 501 541.

Kyros and the Tontatta planned Operation SOP around incapacitating Sugar. When she lost consciousness, the toys returned to human form and the memories erased by her ability returned. The resulting upheaval exposed Doflamingo’s rule and gave the rebels their opportunity to fight for the country 598 625 626.

Doflamingo responded with the Birdcage, trapping Dressrosa and drawing lethal threads inward. He placed bounties on Riku, the Straw Hats, and their allies to turn the population against them. Civilians, Marines, gladiators, and pirates eventually worked together to slow the cage while Luffy fought Doflamingo 631 707 725 726.

Luffy defeated Doflamingo, and the Birdcage disappeared. Marine Vice Admiral Maynard then broadcast the ruined country and Doflamingo’s crimes to neighboring nations. Dressrosa’s citizens asked Riku to reclaim the throne, explicitly choosing his peaceful rule over the prosperity associated with Doflamingo. Admiral Fujitora publicly apologized to Riku for the World Government’s role in enabling the Shichibukai’s reign 731 732 733.
