Background

Usopp had left the Straw Hat Pirates before the Judicial Island rescue. On the Sea Train, he initially refused to accompany Sanji and Franky, arguing that he no longer belonged to the crew and was ashamed to face his former companions after making a scene. 4

Usopp participated in the Judicial Island operation, though he initially presented himself as the separate “Sniper King,” a supposed friend of Usopp. Luffy and Chopper enthusiastically accepted the persona, gratifying his vanity. 7

After the operation, his pride delayed his return to the crew until the ship was already leaving Water 7 under Garp’s attack. He finally apologized, and Luffy extended his hand to welcome him back aboard. 61

During the two-year separation, Usopp underwent harsh training on Boin Archipelago. He accidentally ate a Devil Fruit hidden in his food despite previously not wanting to become a landlubber.
