Luffy grew up with Ace and Sabo, with whom he became sworn brothers. The three trained, collected valuables to fund a future ship, and pursued their shared ambition of becoming pirates despite Garp's repeated attempts to make them join the Marines. Their childhood bond was interrupted when Sabo left the Goa Kingdom and was attacked by a Celestial Dragon, losing his memories; Luffy and Ace believed he had died. 738
Luffy invited Xi Yan into the Straw Hat Pirates during the Water Seven crisis, postponing the customary welcome feast until Nico Robin had been rescued.
