Background / History

Luffy invited Xi Yan into the Straw Hat Pirates during the Water Seven crisis, postponing the customary welcome feast until Nico Robin had been rescued. He treated Xi Yan as a partner from the outset and led the crew’s effort to defy the World Government and the Buster Call at Enies Lobby for Robin’s sake. 2 15 22

At Thriller Bark, Luffy fought Gecko Moria after having his shadow stolen. Once Moria was defeated and Brook’s shadow restored, Luffy formally welcomed Brook aboard after learning of his promise to Laboon. 108 115

Luffy later learned that Vice Admiral Garp is his grandfather and that Revolutionary Army leader Dragon is his father. He showed little interest in Dragon’s history, focusing instead on his friends and journey. 54 56

Personality

Luffy places absolute faith in his crewmates. He supports their decisions even when they are dangerous, such as allowing Sanji to pursue Robin, and he repeatedly treats the rescue of a crewmate as more important than the threat posed by the World Government. 4 15 22

He is impulsive, curious, and easily distracted by adventure, strange creatures, or food. He chose to investigate Punk Hazard despite its abnormal lack of a magnetic field, and he followed the scent of food through Fish-Man Island’s seawater to locate a banquet hall. 368 411

Luffy does not seek to rule others.
