Nami was among the people persecuted in her hometown by Arlong. The memory of Arlong's protection payments remains painful for her, and learning that Arlong had been Jinbe's subordinate drives her to seek Jinbe out at Sea Forest. After Jinbe explains that Arlong concealed his crimes by bribing local Marines and kneels to accept responsibility, Nami forgives him. 342 370 376 377

She distinguishes understanding the persecution of Fish-Men from excusing Arlong's actions. Camie's capture at Sabaody helps her understand that Fish-Men and merfolk can also suffer at human hands, but she explicitly refuses to pity Arlong. During Thriller Bark, the prospect of being poor in her next life enables her to rapidly overcome the despair caused by Perona's Negative Ghost. Her greed does not override her loyalty. She refuses to take Lola's share of Moria's treasure because Lola previously saved her, defends the Straw Hats' past protection of Camie when Fish-Man Island accuses the crew, and considers helping Alabasta with rain if she gets the opportunity. 109 369 406

Nami is pragmatic and increasingly self-assured. She recognizes when overwhelming enemies should be avoided, but later refuses to be treated as someone who must hide behind stronger crewmates. At the Biscuit House, Nami insists on facing Monet herself while Robin, Perona, Zoro, and the others evacuate the children. Law directs the shipboard group toward Zou, where his companions are waiting, and Nami checks the supplied Vivre Card to establish their course.
