Background / History

The Donquixote Family was among the royal families that left their nations for Mary Geoise eight hundred years earlier; Dressrosa's Riku Family subsequently became the kingdom's ruling house. Doflamingo regarded Dressrosa as property that rightfully belonged to his own bloodline. 577

Doflamingo's family later fell from its Celestial Dragon status after his father brought them down from their privileged life. Doflamingo described the resulting life as harsh, stated that his mother died during that period, and killed his father himself. 577

Ten years before the Dressrosa conflict, Doflamingo demanded that King Riku either abdicate or secretly gather ten billion Beli before dawn. He exploited the citizens' trust in Riku, manipulated the king into attacking civilians with his strings, defeated the Royal Army, and then positioned himself as Dressrosa's savior and new king. 590
