History

Conflict with Sunagakure

• Cloud Shinobi launch a surprise attack near the Land of Rain, destroying five Sunagakure outposts and one base before Sand reinforcements stabilize the defense line 1.
• At a later battle, Hoshino Maki's explosive-tag trap devastates a Cloud force. His puppets then bind most of the survivors with chains rigged with explosive tags 9 10.
• After negotiations with the Cloud Ninja, Maki argues that allowing their forces to retreat prevented a costly continuation of the war for Sunagakure 18 24.

Wars and shifting alliances

• Cloud forces fight Konoha on the eastern front. Ay's clash with Minato Namikaze injures Minato, while later Cloud attacks push Konoha's defensive line back 39 40 41.
• Kumogakure invites Sunagakure into an alliance that also involves Iwagakure. The proposal is contentious in Sunagakure because the Cloud and Sand have only recently fought each other 40 41 46.
• During the continuing war with Konoha, Cloud forces suffer the destruction of a grain supply that includes seed grain intended for the Land of Lightning 134.
• Following Sunagakure's conquest of Iwagakure, the Cloud Ninja seek closer cooperation with the Sand, including sending more merchants and students to Sunagakure's Ninja Academy 243 246.
• As Sunagakure's power grows, Kumogakure and Konoha agree to cooperate against it. Their forces clash with Uchiha fighters in the Land of Rivers, but distrust strains the alliance after Dodai orders the Cloud contingent to retreat 290 295 296.

Abilities & Tactics

Nintaijutsu and Lightning Release

• Many Cloud Ninja train in Nintaijutsu, which helped some survive Maki's explosive-tag barrage 9.
• Kumogakure's Lightning Release Armor enhances physical strength and speed while providing piercing power and defense; its noted weakness is a lack of long-range capability 18.
• The Third Raikage uses Lightning Release Armor with his Hell Stab techniques during his taijutsu battle against Maki 308.

Battlefield coordination

• Cloud Jonin initially outnumber and outclass the Jonin in Maki's Sand reinforcement detachment, forcing Sand Chunin to work together merely to restrain them 10.
• Against Uchiha Fugaku's Susanoo, Cloud troops coordinate their attacks, deploy smoke bombs and withdraw as a unit 296.

Notable Members

• Pashira — Cloud Jonin whose force is devastated by Maki's traps; he remains a dangerous opponent in the ensuing battle 9 10.
• Ay — Lightning Release Armor user whose clash with Minato affects Konoha's eastern front 39 40.
• Killer B — fights alongside Ay against Konoha and later represents the Cloud Village in alliance talks with Konoha 39 290.
• Dodai — negotiates with Sunagakure and later commands Cloud forces alongside Konoha's troops in the Land of Rivers 283 284 296.
