First Appearance Chapter 228 (as an unnamed captive husky-like wolf) 228

Background

Hog was born to two wizard parents afflicted with lycanthropy. Because they conceived while transformed during a full moon, he and his siblings were born as true wolves with near-human intelligence rather than inheriting lycanthropy. His parents raised him in a remote forest, taught him about wizarding society, and eventually taught him to speak by using magic to alter his vocalizations. Only Hog and one elder brother survived childhood. 229

A werewolf wizard later demanded that Hog’s parents join a war against wizards. When they refused, his pack ambushed the family; Hog’s parents and brother were killed and eaten, while Hog was kept alive to be sold for profit. He was subsequently imprisoned among smuggled, mistreated magical creatures. 229

Anduin found Hog in the werewolves’ stronghold and investigated whether he carried the lycanthropy virus. Legilimency supported Hog’s claim that he was non-contagious, and Professor Kettleburn’s saliva test confirmed it. Rather than report him to the Ministry, Anduin, Hagrid, and Kettleburn concealed his existence and sheltered him at the Forbidden Forest Cabin. 229 231 232

After recovering, Hog assisted with the care of the rescued creatures. His ability to communicate with animals made treatment easier, and he became the leader of a Kneazle, two Earth Badgers, and three Hedgehogs that remained near the cabin. 233

Appearance

Hog normally resembles a large husky, though he is actually a wolf. His energetic expressions, panting tongue, and tendency to chase his own tail often make his wolfish dignity difficult to maintain. 229 234

  • Typically reaches roughly Anduin’s waist when standing normally. 298
  • Wears a fitted tactical vest and goggles designed to match his fur, giving him the appearance of a Muggle police dog. 234
  • Can shrink to a dog smaller than a person’s knee through his Shrinking Ring. 298 299
  • Can enlarge into a giant wolf comparable in size to Fluffy. 820
  • His giant-wolf Body Strengthening forms include frost-covered and flame-covered variants. 821

Personality

Hog is highly energetic, food-motivated, and mischievous. He eagerly waits beside grills, chews furniture and railings when bored, and has repeatedly caused destruction while experimenting with his equipment or shrinking ability. 233 244 298 300

He is proud of his seniority under Anduin and frequently calls himself “Master,” “Grandpa,” or “Uncle” Hog. He enjoys provoking people—particularly Shalltear, Ronan, the Weasley twins, and Hogwarts students—but becomes anxious when Ginny Weasley decides to play with him. 389 416 635 641 762

Despite his arrogance, Hog is loyal to Anduin and becomes focused and professional when assigned serious work. He conducted surveillance, gathered operational intelligence, hosted an international Auror briefing, and efficiently assisted during Thunderbird’s capture and blood extraction. 274 440 506

Abilities & Skills

Speech and Animal Communication

Hog learned human speech by using magic power to alter his wolf vocalizations. He can also communicate with small animals and many intelligent magical creatures. 229 233 519

  • Helped Hagrid and Kettleburn treat rescued creatures by communicating with them. 233
  • Led and managed smaller creatures living near the Forbidden Forest Cabin. 233
  • Communicated with Thor the young Thunderbird shortly after meeting him. 519

Magic Power and Spellcasting Limitation

Hog possesses approximately 200 Ke of magic power, but cannot cast even basic human spells with a wand, his mouth, or his claws. Professor Kettleburn attributes this to the difference between wolf and human magical physiology. 233

  • Can speak and chant incantations, but conventional spellcasting remains ineffective. 233
  • Uses rune equipment to externally convert his magic power into spell effects. 234 235
  • Can sense the vest’s magic-power draw and remaining output more easily through its external rune attachments. 235

Tactical Vest Operations

Anduin created a tactical vest and goggles that draw upon Hog’s magic power to activate installed runes. Hog learned its functions quickly and demonstrated strong reaction speed and stamina during testing. 234 235

  • Tracking Spell and Echo Spell — augment his already keen sense of smell and provide enhanced environmental perception. 235
  • Disillusionment Charm — grants concealment; Hog used it to sneak behind and startle Qiqi. 235
  • Shield Charm — protected him from a five-spell rapid barrage during Anduin’s movement test. 235
  • Levitation Charm — reduces his weight and increases speed; he can briefly float, though he cannot freely maneuver while airborne. 236
  • Object control — can levitate and throw external objects, compensating for his inability to handle them easily with his paws. 236

Floating Cannon

A back-mounted Floating Cannon uses Hog’s magic power to fire spells, while Hog provides the aiming. 236

  • Fires a Cluster Lightning rune as a silver-blue beam capable of shattering a large rock. 237
  • Can inflict paralysis and burns on living targets. 237
  • Requires careful posture and aiming; Hog initially risked placing his own head in the firing line. 237

Body Strengthening Technique

Hog can directly infuse magic power into his body, vastly increasing his strength, durability, speed, and elemental capabilities. 820 821

  • Steel Bone — makes his body hard and heavy enough to ignore low-powered disarming and stunning spells. 820
  • Aftershock — violently shakes off restraints, including transfigured mud binding his limbs. 820
  • Agile and Swift / Limb Strengthening — greatly improve his mobility and physical attacks. 821
  • Elemental Shell — forms an elemental giant-wolf body with high resistance to direct, transformation, and control spells. 821
  • Element Transformation — switches between frost and flame forms to counter elemental attacks. 821
  • Frost Breath — releases a wide-area freezing gale, though the technique strains him. 821

Surveillance and Investigation

Hog is an exceptional observer and tracker, able to monitor multiple information streams and compile actionable intelligence. 274 462

  • Operated a Magic Monitor with dozens of feeds to identify Slytherin disciplinary violations. 274
  • Tracked the Golden Flyer and identified him as German Minister of Magic Pitt through overheard conversation and photographs. 462
  • Prepared detailed trainee records for Tactics Club recruitment, including academic, physical, and moral evaluations. 665
  • Presented the intelligence briefing and sand-table model for Operation Concentric Circles. 506

Equipment

  • Tactical Vest and Goggles — rune-equipped gear with tracking, echolocation, concealment, shielding, and levitation functions. 234 235 236
  • Floating Cannon — wand-based spell-launching module mounted on his back. 236 237
  • Shrinking Ring / Collar — an invisible-on-demand collar that allows him to alter his size through magic-power input. 298 299
  • Surveillance and recording devices — used for magical monitoring, stakeouts, photographs, and recorded evidence. 274 432 501
  • White coat and examination instruments — used while assisting with Hogwarts student physical examinations. 635 636
  • Whistle — used to command and discipline students during morning exercises. 641

Relationships

  • Anduin — Rescuer, master, mentor, and operational partner. Anduin sheltered Hog, designed equipment around his magical limitations, and relies on him for surveillance, instruction, and experiments. 232 235 274 823
  • Qiqi — Cabin and shop companion. Qiqi praised Hog’s tactical-vest appearance, cleaned up after his animal followers, and often endures his antics. 232 234 299
  • Hagrid — One of Hog’s protectors and caretakers; supported keeping Hog hidden from the Ministry and housed him at the Forbidden Forest Cabin. 232
  • Professor Kettleburn — Confirmed Hog was free of lycanthropy and helped arrange his protection and recovery. 231 232
  • Shalltear — Constant bickering rival. Hog insists on seniority over her, while Shalltear mocks him as a “stinking dog”; their arguments regularly turn into playful fights. 389 520
  • Ginny Weasley — Hog’s enthusiastic playmate and personal nemesis. Ginny repeatedly pets, pulls, rides, and pursues him until he eventually resigns himself to her affection. 247 304 762
  • Ronan — Centaur rival. Hog publicly mocked Ronan after he fell on an obstacle course, provoking a chase through the centaur camp. 416
  • The Weasley twins — Frequent antagonists. They challenged and ambushed Hog during the Basilisk incident, but he defeated both using the Body Strengthening Technique. 641 820
  • Thor — A young Thunderbird who responds to Hog’s animal communication and appears to favor him over Shalltear. 519

Story Role / Major Arcs

Rescue and Recovery

Hog is discovered among creatures imprisoned by werewolves. His tragic origin, non-contagious status, and intelligence lead Anduin, Hagrid, and Kettleburn to secretly take responsibility for him rather than surrender him to the Ministry. 228 229 231 232

Equipment Development

Unable to cast conventional spells despite possessing magic power, Hog becomes the principal test subject for Anduin’s animal-compatible tactical equipment. He learns stealth, shielding, tracking, levitation, object manipulation, and ranged combat through rune modules. 233 234 235 236 237

Surveillance and Silver Spear Operations

Hog’s perception and diligence make him a key intelligence operative. He monitors Slytherin students, tracks Silver Spear members abroad, identifies Minister Pitt as the Golden Flyer, and briefs British and German Aurors before Operation Concentric Circles. 274 462 506

Hogwarts Instruction and Tactics Club

Hog assists in physical examinations, selects Tactics Club candidates, delivers contracts and messages, and briefly serves as Hogwarts’ strict morning-exercise instructor. His demanding drills and point-deduction authority make him deeply unpopular with students. 635 641 665 668

Basilisk Incident

While controlling the Basilisk as part of a student exercise, Hog is tricked by the Weasley twins and Hermione into losing the controller. Enraged at being outmaneuvered, he transforms into an ice-and-fire giant wolf and overwhelms the Gryffindor students before covering up the confrontation with Percy. His behavior gets him removed from the instructor position and replaced by Shalltear. 820 821 823
