Background / History

Tom Riddle was raised in an orphanage before receiving an invitation to Hogwarts, where Albus Dumbledore became the professor who introduced him to magic. He later became Voldemort, built a reign of terror in Britain, and divided his soul through Horcrux creation to evade death 320 364.

Following his earlier defeat, Voldemort survives as a weakened soul attached to Professor Quirinus Quirrell. He remains wary of Dumbledore, refuses to expose himself prematurely, and searches for means to restore his strength rather than risk open conflict 23 42.

Appearance

Klein traps Voldemort in an illusion centered on a giant Faceless Eye, convincing him that he has been chosen as the supreme ruler of darkness. The illusion produces a physical Magic Ring that feeds Voldemort's obsession while poisoning and weakening him 42 43.

Voldemort abandons Quirrell's failing body, creates a diminutive new vessel through Quirrell's sacrifice, and attempts to protect the ring from those drawn to it. After Aurors subdue him, Soren takes the ring, beginning Voldemort's prolonged fixation on reclaiming it 48 50 56.

Sewer Survival and Azkaban

After losing the ring, Voldemort survives in London's sewers, ambushes a dark wizard for a wand, and begins planning vengeance against both the Ministry and Soren 60.

He restores himself by drinking magical-creature blood, reunites with Nagini, and infiltrates the Ministry's contraband warehouse. Klein ultimately knocks him unconscious after he endures the warehouse's protective array, leading to his imprisonment in Azkaban 103 130 131 134.

Resurrections and the Death Eaters' Return

Voldemort escapes his confinement by taking increasingly desperate forms and recruits Peter Pettigrew to rebuild a body. Using his father's remains, Peter's flesh, and an enemy's blood, he performs an ancient resurrection ritual 182 197 198.

He summons surviving Death Eaters, including Bellatrix Lestrange and Dolfin Ror, and begins rebuilding his organization. His forces attack the Ministry, but Soren overwhelms Voldemort and the Death Eaters with Word Spirit before personally killing Voldemort 236 244 246.

The Pursuit of Klein Grindelwald

After returning once more, Voldemort becomes fixated on possessing Klein Grindelwald's body, viewing it as a superior vessel. He plans to exploit the Triwizard Tournament with Barty Crouch Jr. and Igor Karkaroff's assistance 305 312.

The plan collapses under Ministry pressure and interference from Gellert Grindelwald. Voldemort flees, survives in a mushroom host, and eventually travels to America with Peter 316 319 326 337.

The American Campaign

Voldemort abandons human identity, consumes victims to increase his strength, and launches a campaign of killings across the American West. He declares himself the Dark Ruler and seeks to spread fear through public massacres and attacks on the American Magical Congress 338 356 361.

Dumbledore and Moody confront him after locating his Horcruxes. They destroy the remaining vessels with Fiendfyre; Dumbledore then burns Voldemort's final lifeline, Marvolo Gaunt's Ring, and apparently destroys Voldemort himself 364.

Voldemort's remains subsequently become a Godspawn: a thought-form born from his final resentment and the resentment of countless victims, capable of devouring magic and matter to evolve 365 366.
