Background / History

Klein begins as a Nighthawk in Tingen and initially presents himself as an ordinary believer of the Goddess of Night. He receives a Dream card from a Dream Cult member, then becomes involved with Bishop Truman and the Dream pathway despite having already advanced as a Seer 231 236.

After entering Sefirah Castle, Klein gathers Audrey Hall, Alger Wilson, Fors Wall, and Derrick Berg above the Grey Fog. He establishes the Tarot Club under the identity of The Fool, preserving an imposing and mysterious demeanor while using the meetings to acquire formulas, occult knowledge, and Roselle's diary entries 232 235.

He later creates The World, a tangible identity manifested through enhanced spirituality and the Grey Fog, allowing him to participate in Tarot Club dealings without compromising The Fool's authority 258. He also works as the detective Sherlock Moriarty, assists Maric and Sharron, and repeatedly uses alternate identities to investigate supernatural threats 259.

Klein's growing position within the Dream Cult leads to his appointment as Bishop John Constantine. He forces the royal family and major churches to acknowledge his seat on the Nobility Council, using the office to influence Backlund's political direction 369 370. He later assumes Qonas Kilgor's identity through stolen fate and serves as MI9's deputy director while gathering intelligence against the Augustus Family 421 428.

Following his advancement to angelic status, Klein serves alongside the Church of Night during its war with the Church of the God of War. He is formally addressed as the Angel of Miracles and helps defend the Holy Cathedral 488 495. His later advancements entangle him increasingly with Sefirah Castle, the Lord of the Mysteries, the Supreme Dream, and Truman's control over his fate 487 550 552.

Personality

Klein is cautious, observant, and highly adaptive. He habitually prepares contingencies before dangerous encounters, favors indirect methods, and uses disguises, paper figures, divination, and historical projections to avoid exposing his true body 330 380 446.

Despite his growing authority, he remains prone to private embarrassment and self-aware humor. Arrodes' intrusive questioning causes him immediate panic, while revelations about his many overlapping identities leave him exasperated rather than outwardly shaken 269 427.

He values information as both protection and currency. He builds the Tarot Club around exchanges of knowledge, actively seeks Roselle's diary entries, and assigns investigations through The World to expand his intelligence network 232 258 374.

Klein also recognizes the psychological cost of his power. He seeks Audrey Hall's psychotherapy after Sefirah Castle's erosion and again after becoming an Agent of Dream 401 552.

  • Summons angelic allies, Sealed Artifacts, books, weapons, and powerful figures for combat 451 452.
  • Normally maintains up to three Historical Projections as a Scholar of Yore 453.
  • Uses projections to obscure his true body and make enemies misidentify him 446.

  • Resurrects after being killed by the Lord of Storms through the Uniqueness of the Fool 550.
  • Uses Grey Fog, Dream Phosphor, Grafting, and the cloak to reconstruct himself during his advancement 550.
  • Faces ongoing erosion from the Lord of the Mysteries and the Supreme Dream, whose competing wills seek control of his body and soul 487 550 572.

Nighthawk Investigations

While serving in Tingen, Klein investigates the Antigonus notebook incident, detects Trissy despite her invisibility, and participates in operations against rogue Beyonders 240. His spiritual intuition and instinctive marksmanship later allow him to kill a demon apostle threatening Duke Negan 254.

Dual-Pathway Advancement

Under Truman's direction, Klein advances rapidly through both the Seer and Dream pathways. His hybrid powers make disguise, copied abilities, paper figures, paintings, and illusions central to his fighting style 261 290 341.

Pirate Purge and Utopia

Klein uses a prepared force of paper figurines to defeat the Apostle of Desire and traps Senor in a painting 330. He develops Utopia as a dark fairy tale, gaining increasingly lifelike paper figures and a personal puppet-city concept 341 343.
