Background / History

Qin Lai was a wealthy but notorious ruffian of Luming Fort. Before Qin Meng's change, he exploited Qin Meng's gambling addiction, steering him toward a rigged gambling den connected to Lin Hai and profiting from Qin Meng's losses. He also participated in criminal ventures including gambling operations, human trafficking, and coercive land seizures under the protection of his elder brother Qin Wang's influence. 18 26

He held a fifty-tael debt against Shen Qiuyue after she mortgaged herself to obtain medicine for the dying Qin Meng. Qin Lai intended to use the debt to take Shen Qiuyue; his plan was to keep her for himself and eventually sell her to a brothel. 1 22 30

When Qin Meng began earning money through hunting, Qin Lai attempted to pressure him into surrendering Shen Qiuyue and later ordered Song Zhong and several men to murder him in Luming Mountain. The group disappeared after following Qin Meng, leaving Qin Lai anxious and suspicious. 2 7 14

Though capable of feigning reconciliation when useful, Qin Lai is a poor actor whose resentment remains obvious. His apology to Qin Meng was part of Qin Wang's plan to lower Qin Meng's guard before further action was taken against him. 26 27
