Background / History

Wang Tieniu is the grandson and sole companion of the elderly hunter Wang Gan, later identified as Wang Hanshan. His grandfather is a retired border soldier, renowned hunter, and skilled bow-maker; the pair live in difficult circumstances, with Wang Gan's old injuries and illness requiring medicine. 18 23 45

He first meets Qin Meng while returning from fishing near Luming Mountain. Astonished by Qin Meng's haul of spotted deer and a giant python, Tieniu becomes eager to hunt deeper in the mountain himself. Qin Meng warns him that the mountain has become increasingly dangerous, but Tieniu's fascination with valuable prey remains clear. 16

Tieniu later helps Qin Meng sell deer in town and guards the sled when disciples of Leiming Martial Hall attempt to inspect and seize the catch. Qin Meng intervenes before the confrontation escalates. 17 Qin Meng subsequently treats him to a substantial meal, buys him warm clothing, and gives him food for Wang Gan, earning Tieniu's sincere affection and respect. 17 18

When Qin Meng visits Wang Gan for a bow and martial guidance, Tieniu witnesses Qin Meng rapidly learn and merge saber techniques. Rather than becoming jealous, he openly praises Qin Meng and reflects on his own slower progress. 23 24 25

His greatest flaw is stubbornness born from poverty and responsibility. During the wolf-pack incident, he refuses to abandon two spotted deer because he sees them as money for his grandfather's medicine, even when the blood scent draws the wolves closer. He later admits that his insistence on going deeper into the mountains and keeping the prey endangered the group. 36 37

He is nevertheless brave under pressure. Surrounded by wolves, he fights one with his hunting knife, retrieves the deer, and climbs to safety rather than abandoning his companions. 36

Wang Gan's Household

He helps connect Qin Meng with Wang Gan for the purchase of a powerful bow and is present when Qin Meng demonstrates extraordinary saber talent. Wang Gan later hopes Qin Meng and Tieniu can enlist together and look after one another. 18 23 24

Wolf-Pack Incident

Tieniu ventures too deeply into the mountain with Li Tiezhu and Qin Xiaoshan. His refusal to abandon two deer helps attract a wolf pack, forcing the group into the trees. Qin Meng arrives in time to slaughter the wolves and save them. 36 37 38

Linshan Town and the Ambush

After the wolf hunt, Tieniu receives a share of the proceeds and accompanies Qin Meng to purchase medicinal resources. He supports Qin Meng during confrontations with Lei Jun's group, then fights in the later masked-men ambush, where his arm is injured. 41 42 44

Repayment to Qin Meng

While helping process an iron-armored demon salamander, Tieniu secretly gives Qin Meng a primary cultivation technique from Wang Hanshan. The gift is repayment for Qin Meng saving his life and reflects Wang Hanshan's trust in him. 45
