I'm Not That Trustworthy Either
"Alright, Lynch, stop laughing. Let's take a look at this case; we need to get down to business!"
Leonard finally produced the documents after Lynch had mocked Klein for wanting to perform in the circus for a while.
"I really thought you came here to chat, but it turns out you had something to do. Couldn't you have just taken it out sooner?"
Lynch complained about sitting up straight.
Leonard pretended not to hear and gestured for them to hurry up and look, they were almost there.
Lynch and Klein started reading. It was pretty much as described in the original book. Various deaths had occurred in Tingen, all of them natural deaths, but these deaths were more than five times the usual number, which was a cause for concern.
Of course, he knew who did it.
"I'll team up with the two of you, Frye and Royale, Kenley team up with another person. They'll investigate the relevant incidents in the North Borough. We'll go Lower Street."
Leonard offered an explanation, Lynch nodded. By then, the carriage had arrived at the Lower Street.
Lynch got out of the car and looked around, then quickly lowered his head to hide his unease.
No, he's been here before!
That's the street where Ms. Lilian, whom Trissy was looking for, lived. Is Trissy crazy?
Why did she choose this place to commit the crime?
Will Klein's divination reveal something?
Although he didn't appear in front of Lilian at the time, he did give Lilian money!
Lynch rubbed his temples, praying that nothing bad would happen to anyone around Lilian; he had no desire to be consulted by Klein.
But by sheer coincidence, they were heading in the direction of Ms. Lilian's house.
The incident occurred with another tenant of Ms. Lilian's house who rented a floor stall. His wife died of a heart attack, and her body was still on the table. Because other people sleep on the floor stall during the day, the body cannot occupy it.
Only Lilian and her two children lived in the house, along with a tenant who was sleeping on a mattress on the floor and snoring.
Lilian was doing laundry, and the noise didn't bother the tenant at all.
Her two children seemed to have recovered; they timidly kept their distance from the body, glancing at it anxiously every now and then.
Lynch breathed a sigh of relief.
The two children recovered from their illnesses and their health improved somewhat. Lilian probably spent all the money on the children's medical treatment and health care, but there was probably nothing left. Lilian herself was still as thin as before.
Regardless of the era, medical treatment is always a huge expense.
Where is her husband?
Klein pointed to the corpse and asked Lilian.
Lilian quickly stood up and wiped her hands. She said nervously, "Lawvis went out. The officer said he could stay home, but his boss said he'd be fired if he didn't go. He also has a child and is currently being questioned by the officer."
Lilian pointed to a spot outside where Beech Mountbatten and his younger brother were standing, and in front of them was a thirteen-year-old boy.
"This child is about to go to work. Without Zola's help, he won't be able to go to school. Alas, poor Zola, poor child."
They lent me a pound earlier; it was a kind person who gave it to me. They wanted to buy the boy some decent clothes for his classmate's birthday party, but now... sigh!
Lilian wiped her eyes; it looked like she had cried that morning too.
Lynch and the others pursed their lips, unsure how to assess the situation.
Leonard, however, quickly regained his senses. He seized upon the key point Lilian had made and asked, "A kind person? When did they appear?"
Lynch sighed.
Lilian spoke very quickly; she hadn't been able to get Leonard and the others to pretend they hadn't heard her. She just hoped Klein wouldn't divine too much, because if he did...
Leonard and Klein didn't bring anything unusual, so he might still have time to escape.
But there shouldn't be any problem.
Klein could probably only divine that it was the five pounds he gave to Lilian; he just needed to figure out where he got the money from in the first place, something Klein would definitely care about a lot.
Logically speaking, he hadn't even reached Sefirah Castle yet at that time!
Thinking of this, he sighed and watched as Lilian took out the note he had written and gave it to Klein, who then began to divine.
"Lynch, you must have struck it rich!"
Klein opened his eyes with envy.
He had just used Dream Divination and saw Lynch write a message to Ms. Lilian in this house, and then he saw Lynch take out his wallet, which contained a thick wad of banknotes, all ten pounds each.
"It was given to me by Mr. Azik. Can you please not focus on the money?"
Lynch complained.
He guessed that Klein would definitely spot his bulging wallet immediately.
"Was it given to her by Lynch?"
Leonard realized what was happening and looked at Klein, asking a question.
Klein nodded.
"It was him who gave it to me. I saw him take out a sum of money and put it under Lilian's pillow, along with a note. Finally, he clutched his wallet and left, heartbroken."
Klein gritted his teeth. This guy used to be just as poor as him, but now he's suddenly rich!
"Have you hooked up with that Mr. Azik?"
Leonard had previously been suspicious of this kind person, worried that he might be an Pathway Beyonder who had bought his life with money.
Hearing that it was given by Lynch, he immediately dismissed the idea.
He was only interested in Mr. Azik, whom Lynch had mentioned.
The fact that someone would directly give Lynch such a large sum of money made him seriously suspect that Lynch had betrayed his integrity.
Mr. Azik said he was a friend of my father's and had treated me like a junior ever since we met once at a gathering of teachers in Skuton.
He's always been very good to me, giving me money and gifts. He even told me to leave the security company and work for him, offering to pay me ten pounds a month.
He recently tried to introduce me to someone, saying that I didn't have enough money to attract girls, so he gave me some money.
A while ago, he said that if I got married, he would give me the house he lives in now. I was still wondering what his relationship with my father was, and why he was being so good to me.
Lynch shook his head, and Leonard said no more.
He was fine making fun of Lynch, but he felt embarrassed making fun of Lynch's father.
"Alright, Klein, stop eavesdropping here and hurry up and divine the cause of death. Should we leave?"
Leonard turned to Klein and said.
Klein ignored the probing in his words, nodded, and told the two of them to get lost.
"Lynch, look at him. His behavior was already very suspicious, I even suspected..."
Leonard muttered something, Lynch interrupted him, saying in a low voice:
"I believe Klein has some secrets, but I can assure you he's not a bad person. Everyone has secrets, like you. I've noticed many times that you've been whispering to yourself."
But I never told anyone. I trust you just as much as I trust Klein. You two are both my friends!
He looked intently at Leonard.
Leonard pursed his lips, and after a long while, he said almost imperceptibly, "I'm not that trustworthy either. You can actually report me."
