Background and History
Rus Wang customized the elves as the indigenous people of the system-created Zheer Continent. They began in the late Neolithic Age, with no cultivation system in use and a population of more than 3.113 million 1. Their southern tribes were moving from foraging to slash-and-burn agriculture, while northern communities faced attacks from refugee soul beasts that mistook elves for humans 1 2.
Rus Wang protected northern settlements, supplied crop seeds, and taught farming, copperworking, and a written and spoken Elven language based on Chinese. He initially let villages govern themselves, but intervened after a dispute over a salt mine led to mass killing and forced labor 2 4. The resulting Elf Kingdom developed elected prime ministers, a civil service, an army, and the Grey Feather Division, which investigated corruption and made arrests 11 34.
The kingdom later adopted Mental Contracts with soul beasts, industrialized, and began space exploration. Its first manned spacecraft carried the elf Alexei into space 11 38 89. After Chapter 94, the kingdom was renamed the Kingdom of Locke to reflect Rus Wang’s equal treatment of its elves, dragonkin, and dragons 129.
Appearance
Elves resemble humans closely enough to disguise themselves among them, but have conspicuously long ears. They can use runes developed by Barus to make their ears appear round 32 44.
- Distinguishing feature: Long ears, noted by soul beasts encountering them for the first time 44.
- Variation: Brown skin and red or black hair occur among ordinary elves 57.
Abilities and Biology
Soul Power and cultivation
- Every elf can gain Soul Power at age twelve, but elves have no Martial Soul awakening 2.
- They cannot absorb soul rings and do not need one to pass a cultivation-level threshold. Consequently, cultivation gives them no reason to hunt soul beasts for rings 2 54.
- An elf’s body does not fully mature until age 45. Forcing a breakthrough to level 30 before then causes irreparable physical harm 23.
- Elves generally live around 300 years. Reaching level 90 extends life to about 1,200 years, with another 100 years for each subsequent level 2.
Mental Contracts
- A Mental Contract lets an elf share a soul beast partner’s strength and obtain soul skills without killing the beast. The partnership can benefit the beast’s cultivation as well 10 11.
- Depending on mental capacity, contracted soul beasts can reside in an elf’s Mental World; an elf may bring up to four of them back out 43.
- Because suitable intelligent partners are scarce, many elf ground troops instead use Barus’s Two-Horned Imprint to gain elemental attacks through an external object 42 94.
Society
- Elven pregnancies last 24 months, and elves cannot naturally have children with humans 2.
- The Council of Sages elects a prime minister from among senior officials to handle government affairs under Rus Wang’s rule 11 34.
- The spread of Soul Master cultivation helped trigger violent uprisings in Levant Year 196. The kingdom suppressed them and publicly introduced Mental Contracts during its military reforms 11.
- Dragons helped establish the kingdom’s early fields of development. Shared schooling and Mental Contracts later reinforced ties between elves and dragons 34.
