Story Role / Major Arcs
Chat Group and Future Knowledge
Dumbledore joins the Chat Group as one of its first members. He initially investigates the mysterious interface with his Elder Wand, then willingly experiences the future recorded in Harry's story. The experience gives him knowledge of Voldemort's Horcruxes and motivates him to prevent the tragedies he witnesses. 2 3
He returns Flender's help with magical manuscripts, phoenix feathers, and sweets. Later, he allows the group to read his story after removing material that would violate Newt and Harry's privacy, while leaving his own virtues, failures, and death unedited. 3 5
Chamber of Secrets
Dumbledore retrieves Ravenclaw's Diadem, then enlists McGonagall, Kettleburn, Flitwick, Sprout, and Snape to investigate the Chamber of Secrets. 11 12
Using Parseltongue, he summons and questions the Basilisk. He learns that Salazar Slytherin had instructed it to remain below Hogwarts and not harm humans, while Tom Riddle later ordered it to attack students. This confirms Riddle's responsibility for Myrtle Warren's death and Hagrid's wrongful punishment. 13
Rather than destroy the Basilisk, Dumbledore blinds its lethal gaze with a conjured pair of magical “spectacles,” keeps it under supervision, and brings it to his office. 13
Horcrux Hunt and Hogwarts Reform
Dumbledore plans to gather and destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes, hunt the Basilisk, clear Sirius Black's name, and break the restrictions surrounding the Three Unforgivable Curses and the Defense Against the Dark Arts post. 6 7
By the following school year, he has located every Horcrux except the one within Harry and Voldemort's main soul. He also considers reforms to Hogwarts, including improved teaching methods, stronger staff, physical education, and broader physical training for students. 11 47 58 65
Pettigrew's Exposure and Harry's New Family
Dumbledore visits the Burrow, exposes Ron Weasley's pet rat Scabbers as Peter Pettigrew, and captures him. He explains Pettigrew's betrayal of the Potters and coordinates with Arthur Weasley and Fudge to overturn Sirius Black's conviction. 59 60 61
After Sirius is released and Pettigrew is imprisoned, Dumbledore accompanies Sirius and Lupin to bring Harry away from the Dursleys. He confronts the Dursleys over their abuse of Harry, compensates them for raising him, and threatens legal action unless they change. 62 63
Dumbledore then entrusts Harry to Sirius and Lupin, tells Harry the truth about his parents' deaths, invites him to Hogwarts, and appoints Lupin as Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. 64 65
