Background / History
Yan Fangxu arrived on Nuxiao Planet as captain of the thirty Marines assigned to protect Governor Gu Hang. He initially regarded surface duty as a poor career prospect and later recalled that his transfer followed an overheard joke about Commodore Yelicia. 2 23
At the outset of Gu Hang's governorship, Yan questioned the practicality of aiding the Waste Mine Society and doubted whether Nuxiao Planet could both develop and meet its Imperial tax obligation within two years. 1 His confidence was challenged when Gu Hang transformed 300 supposedly expendable Servitors into disciplined T5 infantry in a remarkably short time. 2 4
Personality
Yan Fangxu is cautious, practical, and focused on military realities. He initially pushes back on Gu Hang's ambitions because he recognizes the planet's limited time, resources, and security threats. 1
He is highly capable in warfare but less adept at political inference; Gu Hang notes that he can track raiders through sparse evidence despite being slow to suspect Revival City's involvement. 18 Yan also seeks certainty that his actions are justified, asking Gu Hang to distinguish legitimate psionic ability from cult-derived power before accepting the campaign against Vaughan's sect. 24
His opinion of Gu Hang steadily improves. After witnessing the Governor's achievements and the cult threat firsthand, he begins to see a viable future under Gu Hang's patronage. 23 During the Xenomorph Forest crisis, he acts not only to save his battalion but also to draw pressure away from Gu Hang when he believes the Governor may be under attack. 48
Abilities & Skills
Military Command
Yan Fangxu is an experienced Imperial officer whose command style prioritizes preparation, discipline, and defensible positions.
- Led Marines and Servitors in the destruction of a Prisoner-Dead convoy, taking captives for interrogation. 3
- Directed the infantry advance during the assault on the Prisoner-Dead camp. 4
- Commanded the newly formed 3rd Infantry Battalion during Xenomorph Forest clearing operations. 40
- Constructed a mutually supporting triangular defensive position within roughly ten minutes after detecting an approaching monster horde. 40
- Recognized that the monsters' encirclement and withdrawal from direct assaults suggested a deliberate trap. 41
Reconnaissance and Tracking
Yan can derive usable leads from limited battlefield evidence.
- Tracked raiders who had attempted counter-reconnaissance after the theft of Revival City's supply shipment. 18
- Dispatched Marines to follow trails and identify several possible routes and destinations, later cross-referenced with Revival City intelligence. 18
- Investigated the source of Abscess Monster attacks and identified the Xenomorph Forest as their point of origin. 37
Combat Proficiency
Yan personally participates in dangerous assault actions and is known among his Marines as a formidable fighter.
- Led two Marine assault teams into River Valley Manor alongside Gu Hang. 21
- Reacted immediately to a hostile psyker's Wind Bullet and entered the breach first. 21

Story Role / Major Arcs
Waste Mine Society Campaign
Yan raises concerns over Gu Hang's decision to defend the Waste Mine Society, then leads forces against the Prisoner-Dead convoy and supports the surprise assault on their camp. He is impressed by the Servitor infantry's unexpectedly effective discipline and tactics. 1 3 4
River Valley Manor Operation
After raiders steal supplies meant for Gu Hang, Yan's tracking work provides the key evidence leading to River Valley Manor. He later leads Marines in the manor breach, helps suppress Vaughan with concentrated electromagnetic-rifle fire, and obeys Gu Hang's order to take him alive. 18 21 22
Expansion of Gu Hang's Forces
Gu Hang entrusts Yan with recruiting two hundred new soldiers from the servants brought down from orbit. Although he cannot explain Gu Hang's accelerated training methods, Yan accepts that the Governor can produce regular soldiers at an impossible pace. 26
Xenomorph Forest Encirclement
While clearing incubation nests with the 3rd Infantry Battalion, Yan is ambushed by large numbers of monsters. His defensive preparations allow the battalion to repel repeated attacks, but the appearance of corrosive Abscess Sprayers and an extended encirclement leads him to request reinforcements and warn Gu Hang of a possible trap. 40 41
When he learns Gu Hang may have been ambushed during the rescue operation, Yan leads the 3rd Battalion in a measured breakout to divert enemy attention. His unit reaches the battlefield in time to assist with the final cleanup. 48
