Background / History

Before Gu Hang's intervention, the Waste Mine Society was an isolated community of more than 900 people living in abandoned pre-war mine shafts. Its residents survived through manual extraction of low-quality ore, selling it cheaply to Trash Town in exchange for insufficient food. The settlement had almost no technology or equipment, few firearms, and no viable means of defending itself beyond its sealed, hard-to-breach mine entrance. 7 9 17

The society was led by the elected Patel, with Old Butch—his disabled elder relative and former leader—continuing to assist him. Leadership brought no meaningful privilege: the settlement was too poor for its leaders' living and labor conditions to differ much from those of ordinary residents. 7

The Prisoner-Dead bandits targeted the settlement's inhabitants rather than its ore. Their plan was to breach the mine with explosives, slaughter or consume residents, and sell survivors to Orks in the High Wall Ruins in exchange for weapons. 3

Patel appealed directly to Gu Hang for help. After Gu Hang's forces destroyed the Prisoner-Dead's main force, Patel returned to the mine and secured the society's complete submission; at that time, it numbered 907 people. 1 5 7 Gu Hang subsequently integrated it into his territory and began transforming it from a vulnerable mining camp into an industrial center. 10 11

Settlement Conditions

Prior to its redevelopment, residents lived underground in cramped caverns without adequate sanitation. Long-term confinement and mine labor left many pale, malnourished, dust-covered, and burdened by hidden injuries. 7 8 11

• The original mine workings relied on manual pickaxes, carts, and abandoned shafts with low reserves and difficult extraction conditions. 8 9
• A previous attempt to establish a surface camp ended when Prisoner-Dead raiders captured dozens of residents. 9
• Under Gu Hang's plan, Old Butch led construction of a defended surface settlement, allowing residents to leave the mine. 9 11
• By Dennison Henry's later visit, the settlement had factory rows, smoking smelting furnaces, a nearby residential district, and better food than Trash Town. 27

Economy

Alloy Plasteel

Alloy Plasteel became the Waste Mine Society's primary industry. The material is stronger and more corrosion-resistant than the common steel otherwise used on Nuxiao Planet, with applications in construction, machinery, weapons, facilities, and vehicles. 16

• The society's furnaces process local ore into Alloy Plasteel, allowing it to sell higher-value finished material rather than cheap raw ore. 16
• Gu Hang's Black Box production capability keeps manufacturing costs unusually low. 16
• Demand and scarcity make Alloy Plasteel a profitable trade good, attracting interest from Trash Town merchant Dennison Henry. 27 28

Labor and Education

The settlement's industrial expansion created a severe labor shortage, leading Gu Hang to transfer workers in and encourage outside population growth. 33 36

• Limited teaching staff restricted the quality and scale of instruction. 33

Security

The Waste Mine Society initially possessed many residents but only a few guns, leaving it unable to confront the Prisoner-Dead outside its mine. 7

• Gu Hang left 100 Servitor soldiers to secure the settlement and surface construction. 9 11
• Patel selected 100 residents for military service; they received weapons, combat uniforms, Alloy Plasteel ballistic plates, machine guns, and mortars. 11 13
• The resulting Waste Mine Company was organized as a 100-man light-infantry unit and received training enhancements intended to bring it to T5 standard. 13
• The company later fought in the assault on River Valley Manor, advancing behind Strider Type V armored vehicles and providing mortar and machine-gun fire. 19 21
• Pobov, a mining captain from the society, became the company's commander and was later recognized by Gu Hang's system as eligible for Hero activation. 20 50
