Background / History
Yu Xiaogang possesses half-level Innate Soul Power and the detached beast martial soul Luo Sanpao. He built his reputation around spirit master theory, including the Ten Great Soul Master Theories and the assertion that “there are no trash martial souls, only trash soul masters.” 1 37
He reached level 29 as a Soul Grand Master but devoted himself to theoretical data rather than practical combat or Luo Sanpao's development. He fed Luo Sanpao cheap food chosen to make it release its characteristic gaseous attacks, overlooking the martial soul's possible dragon-type lineage and evolutionary needs. 37 53
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is a crew-cut man often described as weathered and prematurely aged; during and after the arena incident, his face is sallow and his condition visibly frail. 31 37 38
- Crew-cut hair. 37
- Appears older and more worn-down than his father, Yu Yuanzhen. 31
- Has a sallow complexion and unstable soul power after Luo Sanpao is injured. 38
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is intensely proud of his status as a theorist and reacts badly when Ning Qinghe's achievements undermine his conclusions. News that another person with half-level Innate Soul Power had achieved martial soul evolution leaves him jealous, volatile, and unable to accept that his own limits may have resulted from neglect rather than fate. 14 28 30
His pride repeatedly overrides self-interest. Though Ning Qinghe presents a plausible route to level 30 and Luo Sanpao's evolution, Yu Xiaogang refuses the institute's assistance so that he can prove his theories independently. 53 54 He remains determined and protective of Tang San's development, but this can become possessive; he pressures Tang San to affirm their master-disciple bond and suspects him of disloyalty when he hesitates. 54 55
Abilities & Skills
Luo Sanpao
Yu Xiaogang's martial soul is a rare detached beast martial soul that manifests as a chubby, puppy-like creature. Though treated by Yu Xiaogang as worthless, Ning Qinghe identifies it as a potentially powerful dragon-lineage martial soul whose growth was inadequately supported. 37 53
- Possesses two yellow spirit rings. 37
- Can be commanded to attack with Hongtian Liede Luo Sanpao. 37
- Its gaseous attack attempt against Ning Qinghe fails and results in backlash when Luo Sanpao is struck by spirit power. 38
- Luo Sanpao cannot manifest again until Yu Xiaogang recuperates after its injury. 38
- Its suspected origin is the Radiant Sacred Dragon bloodline. 53
Soul Master Theory
Yu Xiaogang is known for the Ten Great Soul Master Theories and presents himself as an authority on martial soul cultivation. 37
- Guides Tang San's cultivation and promises to develop a method for cultivating Twin Martial Souls. 55
- Knows of a Title Douluo with Twin Martial Souls and uses this connection to reinforce his authority over Tang San. 55
- His lack of practical combat training becomes apparent in his rapid defeat by Ning Qinghe. 38
Proposed Martial Soul Evolution
Ning Qinghe's assessment indicates that Luo Sanpao could be developed rather than discarded, but Yu Xiaogang has not accepted the proposed treatment. 53 54
- Conditioning, medicinal stimulation, and a high-quality third spirit ring could potentially allow him to reach level 30. 53
- Dragon-attributed items such as Dragon Blood Flower could help excavate Luo Sanpao's dragon bloodline. 53
- A Martial Soul Fusion Skill with compatible companions may compensate for Luo Sanpao's deficiencies and promote growth. 53
Relationships
- Yu Yuanzhen — Father and Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan sect master. Yu Yuanzhen repeatedly seeks help for Yu Xiaogang's cultivation, but is frustrated by his son's pride and refusal to cooperate. 26 51 54 98
- Tang San — Disciple. Tang San protects Yu Xiaogang's reputation by volunteering to replace him in an arena challenge, though later defeats make him question his teacher's reliability. 33 52
- Ning Qinghe — Theoretical and personal rival. Ning Qinghe exposes Luo Sanpao's potential, defeats Yu Xiaogang in battle, and later offers a path to improve his cultivation; Yu Xiaogang interprets this as humiliation and refuses. 37 38 53 54
- Tang Hao — Tang San's father and a hostile figure toward Yu Xiaogang. Tang Hao blames him for Tang San's circumstances and severely injures him during the raid on the institute. 61 62
- Flender — A friend whose connection to Yu Xiaogang prompts Yu Yuanzhen to request advance notice if Yu Xiaogang contacts him. 113
Story Role / Major Arcs
Yu Xiaogang learns of Ning Qinghe's research into high-level spirit ring absorption and martial soul evolution, reacting with envy because Ning Qinghe shares his half-level Innate Soul Power yet succeeds where Yu Xiaogang believes he failed. He travels to the Extreme Research Institute with Tang San under the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan's invitation. 14 25 26
At the institute's public demonstration, Yu Xiaogang refuses to believe Ning Qinghe can absorb a ten-thousand-year spirit ring and privately hopes the attempt will fail. After Ning Qinghe succeeds, Yu Xiaogang provocatively demands an arena test, creating tension between the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan and Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. 28 31 32
Yu Xiaogang volunteers for the resulting Soul Grand Master challenge, but Tang San initially offers to fight in his place. The confrontation becomes a two-on-one battle against Ning Qinghe. After Ning Qinghe explains that Luo Sanpao may be an undeveloped dragon-lineage martial soul, Yu Xiaogang attacks in anger; Luo Sanpao is injured, and Yu Xiaogang is eliminated before displaying meaningful combat ability. 33 37 38
While hospitalized, he rejects Ning Qinghe's apology and later refuses the institute's detailed proposal to improve his soul power and evolve Luo Sanpao. He instead resolves to pursue the research alone and relies on Tang San to help him realize his theories. 52 53 54 55
Tang Hao subsequently assaults Yu Xiaogang while extracting Tang San from the institute, worsening Yu Xiaogang's injuries. Even while still using a crutch, Yu Xiaogang later leaves the hospital against Yu Yuanzhen's wishes to find Tang San and continue his work. 61 98
