Background / History

Early life and manipulation

Ryan is Homelander’s son and was raised in isolation by his mother, Becca, on private Vought property. Becca raised him to be gentle and kept his abilities restrained, leaving him without ordinary schooling or contact with children his own age 168 196 458.

Secretary Wilson sought to turn Ryan into a weapon against Homelander. After ordering the destruction of Becca’s home and her death, Wilson showed Ryan fabricated footage portraying Homelander as the attacker. Ryan’s grief awakened his Laser Eyes and fueled a desire for revenge 185 196 260.

Wilson subsequently had Ryan trained at a military base as the Federation’s “Guardian.” Ryan initially did not want to fight, but he was deployed against the Chimeras in New York, where he proved capable of aerial combat and precision attacks against aberrants 260 266 267.

Meeting Azu

Azu finds Ryan in the quarantine zone after seeing footage of him using red eye-beams against Chimeras. Ryan agrees to leave with Azu in exchange for hamburgers, beginning a guarded but increasingly familial connection between them 293 294.

While eating together, Ryan recounts Becca’s death, his escape, and Wilson’s training program. Azu becomes suspicious that Ryan has been fed a prepared story and investigates the attack on Becca’s hometown 295.

Ryan is used by Wilson and Stormfront as the “net” meant to keep Azu on Love Island for a nuclear strike. Believing Azu murdered Becca, Ryan attacks him; however, Stormfront later confirms that Wilson orchestrated the attack. Ryan turns on Stormfront, and Azu eliminates her after exposing the deception 297 298.

After Wilson and Stormfront’s deaths, Ryan asks whether Azu is truly his father. Azu denies it, but promises that Ryan will not be abandoned 299.

Ryan later becomes restless at Eden Base, prompting Azu to enroll him in the Vought-affiliated Superhuman Children’s Academy under a false identity. He enters fourth grade at age nine and is excited by the prospect of classmates, friends, and using his powers openly 456 457.

His early school life is marked by conflict with Luke, who bullies him over Ginti. Ryan breaks Luke’s leg in retaliation, then later destroys a doghouse and kills several hounds after being lured inside as a prank. Disturbed by his own loss of control, Ryan confesses the incident to Azu 458 463.

Ryan reconciles with Ginti and becomes more comfortable among his classmates. During a mercenary raid on the school camping trip, he kills a mercenary to rescue Ginti and promises to protect her 465 466.
