Background / History
Ayanokouji was educated in the White Room from infancy. The facility subjected children to intensive guidance and training until he was the sole child remaining; he is subsequently identified as the program's greatest masterpiece 88 95.
He enters Advanced Nurturing High School seeking experiences and human emotions unavailable in the White Room. His background remains concealed from most students, even while his exceptional abilities repeatedly influence the school's class competitions 88 127.
Acting Director Tsukishiro is a subordinate of Ayanokouji's father and attempts to force his expulsion during the second Uninhabited Island Exam, offering first-year students 20 million private points to target him 127.
Appearance
Ayanokouji is a brown-haired male student 17 107.
- Usually maintains an inconspicuous, sleepy-looking expression.
- Can move through a crowded situation without drawing notice, to the point that observers may overlook him despite seeing him enter 95.
Personality
Ayanokouji presents himself as detached, unremarkable, and unwilling to involve himself in trouble. He deliberately conceals his strength, allowing Horikita Suzune and others to receive credit for plans he has shaped from behind the scenes 38 83.
Beneath that façade, he is analytical, patient, and intensely pragmatic. He regards people as potential tools, accepts Maya Sato's confession to expand his available “toolbox,” and considers exploiting Kei Karuizawa's bullying conflict to blackmail multiple students into obedience 99 107.
He has a strong desire to learn things absent from the White Room's curriculum. Dokuho Kouya's ability to erase his presence particularly interests him, as Ayanokouji views it as knowledge the White Room never taught him 95.
Abilities & Skills
White Room Training and Combat
Ayanokouji possesses exceptional combat ability developed through White Room training.
- Defeated Ryuen's combat group one at a time, reducing Ryuen himself to a fearful, withdrawn state 114.
- During the second Uninhabited Island Exam, fought challengers daily, including Nanase Tsubasa, Housen Kazuomi, and Utsunomiya Riku 127.
- Defeated Student Council President Miyabi Nagumo with a single punch 127.
- Revealed a substantial portion of his athletic ability during the Sports Festival, earning major points for Class D in multiple events 105.
Strategic Analysis
Ayanokouji rapidly interprets rules, motives, and hidden weaknesses in school examinations.
- Concluded that teachers and school administrators should be treated as negotiable parties rather than absolute authorities during the midterm-expulsion crisis 51.
- Identified weaknesses in Sae Chabashira's pricing for score purchases and successfully pressed for a lower price 52.
- Saw through Class C's deceptive account of Sudo's fight and understood the school's criteria for judging the incident 66.
- Identified the leaders of Classes B and C during the Uninhabited Island Exam and used the examination rules to secure Class D's first-place result 81 83.
Concealment
He habitually suppresses evidence of his capabilities and avoids taking public credit.
- Observed Dokuho Kouya's fight with Manabu Horikita from hiding rather than expose his own combat ability 38.
- Let Horikita take the visible role in Class D's island-exam success while dismissing his own contribution as luck 83.
- Recognized that Dokuho's dealings with Class D were designed not merely to harm Horikita, but to restrict Ayanokouji's own movements 97.
Instrumental Social Manipulation
Ayanokouji plans around other students' vulnerabilities, relationships, and schedules.
- Intended to use Kei Karuizawa's conflict with Class C girls to manufacture evidence of bullying and blackmail both sides into becoming his pawns; the plan was disrupted before completion 99 100.
- Guided Kikyo Kushida into inviting Dokuho Kouya to lunch so Dokuho would be occupied during Ayanokouji's planned operation 98.
- Uses his relationship with Maya Sato as a practical social connection rather than a purely romantic commitment 107.
Relationships
- Horikita Suzune — Classmate and frequent strategic partner. Ayanokouji initially works behind her while allowing her to receive recognition, but later withholds solutions so she can confront her own limitations and grow 66 83 115.
- Dokuho Kouya — Rival observer who identifies Ayanokouji as an extraordinary student and engineers situations to test or restrict him. Ayanokouji recognizes Dokuho as a serious obstacle to his covert operations 56 97.
- Sakayanagi Arisu — White Room-aware rival who seeks a direct confrontation and declares her intention to bury the White Room's masterpiece 110 121.
- Yosuke Hirata — Classmate trusted with information during the Uninhabited Island Exam; Ayanokouji tells him the leaders of Classes B and C to help Class D gain points 81.
- Maya Sato — His girlfriend. Ayanokouji accepts her confession because he sees value in expanding his social resources 107.
- Kei Karuizawa — Ayanokouji initially attempts to exploit her vulnerability and conflict with Class C as part of a blackmail scheme, but the plan fails 99 100.
- Kakeru Ryuen — Former adversary who calls the hidden strategist behind Horikita “Suspect X.” Ayanokouji later defeats Ryuen and his combat group in direct confrontation 114.
- Tsukishiro — Acting Director and subordinate of Ayanokouji's father who participates in the effort to expel him during the second Uninhabited Island Exam 127.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Entrance and First-Month Crisis
Ayanokouji is introduced on the bus to Advanced Nurturing High School. His refusal to give up his seat to an elderly passenger is paired with internal reasoning that younger people contribute more to society and are therefore more entitled to the seat, damaging his image with viewers who learn his thoughts 1 2.
During Class D's midterm crisis, he recognizes that the school does not actually want mass expulsions and negotiates with Chabashira for a reduced score-purchase price 51 52.
Sudo Expulsion and the Uninhabited Island Exam
Ayanokouji attempts to resolve Sudo's crisis but underestimates Sudo's volatility; after Sudo is expelled, he reflects that he failed to account for dealing with someone genuinely incapable rather than merely pretending to be so 67.
As Class D's leader in the Uninhabited Island Exam, he discovers rival-class leaders and uses the rules to bring Class D to first place. Dokuho Kouya later falsely claims the credit for this strategy 81 82 83.
Paper Shuffle Exam
Placed in the Rabbit Group with Dokuho, Ayanokouji becomes the intended target of Class A's attempt to restrain him 91. He realizes Dokuho's presence-concealment technique and attempts to occupy Dokuho through Kushida so he can execute his own plan involving Kei 95 98.
His planned bullying-and-blackmail operation against Kei and the Class C girls is prevented when others intervene 99 100.
Sports Festival and Class Vote Exam
Ayanokouji displays far more of his athletic ability than usual during the Sports Festival, substantially improving Class D's performance 105.
During the Class Vote Exam, Yamauchi's strategy places both Ayanokouji and Horikita at risk of expulsion. Ayanokouji initially withholds his countermeasure, intending for Horikita to overcome the crisis through her own growth 115. He ultimately receives the highest number of praise votes, prompting classmates to suspect him of betraying the class 117.
Second Uninhabited Island Exam
Targeted by Nagumo, first-year students, and Tsukishiro's expulsion plot, Ayanokouji fights successive opponents throughout the exam. He defeats Nagumo in one strike but remains forced into continued combat as Tsukishiro prepares to confront him personally 127.
