Background / History
Madara was one of Konoha's founders and held Shinobi Registration Number 002. Despite that legacy, he later left the village and pursued the Infinite Tsukuyomi, seeking a world in which people would live within imagined dreams rather than reality. 194 195 216
In his old age, Madara searched the Land of Grass battlefield for a young Uchiha suitable to inherit his will. He deliberately avoided Uchiha who had already awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan, believing that people hardened by such pain possessed convictions too firm to be molded. He instead chose the injured Obito, whom he considered malleable enough to accept his beliefs. 100 101
Madara saved Obito, implanted Hashirama-derived power into the boy's right side, and explained that combining the powers of the Uchiha and Senju was necessary to awaken the Rinnegan and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. He taught Obito forbidden Uchiha techniques, Six Paths techniques, and Yin–Yang Release before entrusting him with his will. 105
Before withdrawing from the Ten-Tails apparatus sustaining him, Madara created a Black Zetsu-like half from White Zetsu using Yin–Yang Release and imbued a Black Rod with his consciousness. He then instructed Obito to assume his identity: “From tomorrow on, you are Uchiha Madara.” 105
Appearance
Madara first appears as a frail, white-haired elderly man leaning on a cane, with visible Three-Tomoe Sharingan. 101
- White hair and an aged, near-death appearance during his first meeting with Obito. 101
- Uses a cane while his body is weakened and connected to life-sustaining apparatus. 101 105
- Later returns through Impure World Reincarnation before eventually regaining a fully revived body. 178 214
Personality
Madara is calculating, patient, and highly selective in how he uses people. His decision to recruit Obito rather than the more accomplished Uchiha Sou came from a deliberate assessment: he viewed unawakened, emotionally vulnerable Uchiha as easier to shape than Mangekyo users with established convictions. 100
He values strength, intelligence, and practical information. Even while preparing his return, he closely studies Uchiha Sou's battles to understand unfamiliar forms of Yin–Yang Release and Six Paths power. 187 193
Madara is also intensely prideful and battle-driven. He is reluctant to use Wood Release because of his Uchiha pride, yet ultimately employs it when confronting Hashirama. Defeat does not diminish his will; being overwhelmed by Uchiha Sou instead leaves him eager to understand and surpass Six Paths-level power. 196 215 216
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Madara possesses formidable ocular genjutsu and initially appears with a Three-Tomoe Sharingan. 101
- Uses genjutsu to erase Izumo and Kotetsu's memory of his return to Konoha. 195
- Can identify and assess the resolve, potential, and vulnerabilities of other Uchiha through his understanding of the clan and its dōjutsu. 100 176
- Regains his original eyes after fully reviving, rapidly adapting to their power because they belong to him. 214
Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and Susanoo
Madara can wield the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and manifest Susanoo in battle. 196
- Uses Fire Style: Goka Mekkyaku alongside Susanoo against Hashirama. 196
- Forms Susanoo with two massive chakra scimitars and sends cutting shockwaves across the battlefield. 215
- His Susanoo-based attacks cannot meaningfully threaten Uchiha Sou at Six Paths level. 215
Rinnegan and Six Paths Techniques
Madara was the first person known to awaken the Rinnegan through his own efforts. His Rinnegan was later implanted into Nagato as part of his long-term resurrection plan. 180 198
- Uses Limbo clones after recovering his original eyes. 215
- Possesses knowledge of the Six Paths techniques and passed that knowledge to Obito. 105
- Cannot fully access the Rinnegan's power while limited by an incomplete or unsuitable body. 184 214
Yin–Yang Release
Madara understands and employs Yin–Yang Release, including techniques integrated with Fire Style. 105 215
- Creates a Black Zetsu-like entity from White Zetsu and infuses it with his will. 105
- Produces a Black Rod as a physical manifestation of his consciousness for Six Paths techniques. 105
- Uses Yin–Yang Release: Fire Style: Goka Mekkyaku against Uchiha Sou. 215
Wood Release
Madara can use Wood Release, though doing so conflicts with his pride as an Uchiha. 196
- Uses Wood Release during his renewed battle with Hashirama. 196
- His chakra carries Hashirama's power, making him of particular interest to Isshiki. 184
Space Manipulation
Madara can wield spatial power in combat. 216
- Attempts a final spatial attack against Uchiha Sou. 216
- Sustains wounds from Uchiha Sou's spatial power that prove difficult to heal. 216
Body Modification and Resurrection Research
Madara combines forbidden techniques, White Zetsu material, and stolen knowledge to restore himself. 185 186 193
- Experiments on White Zetsu to create a body capable of bearing Uchiha and Senju power. 185 186
- Studies and modifies Impure World Reincarnation with Black Zetsu's assistance. 183 209
- Plans to use the Mind Body Switch Technique to transfer his consciousness into his prepared White Zetsu body. 193
Ōtsutsuki Transformation
After becoming an Ōtsutsuki and absorbing the Ten-Tails, Madara gains immense power and believes he has finally gained the foundation to face Uchiha Sou. 218
- His transformation depends on the Ten-Tails' external power rather than strength cultivated solely through his own body. 218
- He remains aware that Uchiha Sou reached a similar level without relying on the tailed beasts. 218
Relationships
- Senju Hashirama — Former rival and fellow Konoha founder. Madara seeks a renewed battle with Hashirama, but loses after learning Hashirama has been fully restored to life. 194 195 196 197
- Uchiha Obito — Chosen successor and former pawn. Madara saves, modifies, trains, and orders Obito to inherit his name; Obito later comes to hate Madara while continuing to cooperate with him when necessary. 101 105 216
- Black Zetsu — Long-term collaborator in Madara's plans and resurrection research. Black Zetsu assists with refining Madara's prepared body and advancing his understanding of Impure World Reincarnation. 209 221
- Nagato — Recipient of Madara's Rinnegan and an intended tool for Madara's resurrection plan. 180 207
- Uchiha Sou — Principal rival and obstacle. Madara recognizes Sou's abnormal growth, repeatedly studies his power, battles him in Kumogakure, and is spared because Sou considers him useful against the Ōtsutsuki. 176 215 216
- Ōtsutsuki Isshiki — Observes Madara through Jigen because Madara's chakra contains Hashirama's Asura-derived power. 184
Story Role / Major Arcs
