Background / History
Nagato grew up in the war-torn Land of Rain. His parents were killed by Konoha ninja after Konoha forces entered the country and destroyed his home, leaving him with a lasting hatred of Konoha and the great nations 129. Jiraiya encountered Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan during the war and recognized Nagato's suspected Rinnegan as exceptional; he believed Nagato might one day change the Shinobi World 148.
After Yahiko's death and the destruction of the original Akatsuki, Nagato resolved to fulfill Yahiko's dream of peace through the Rinnegan's destructive power 108. He assumed leadership of Akatsuki and operated through Pain, using fear, assassination, and force against the great villages. He refused to become Uchiha Madara's puppet, insisting on pursuing peace by his own methods and remaining in Amegakure despite its danger 142.
Nagato's first direct clash with Uchiha Sou in the Land of Wind revealed both the breadth of the Rinnegan and his limitations. Pain could pressure Sou with the Deva Path, but Nagato's distant main body and the extreme cost of using transplanted eyes left him unable to sustain the fight 129 130.
Appearance
Nagato has orange hair and pale-purple Rinnegan marked by concentric rings 128.
- His original body became skeletal and dependent on life-support pipes connected to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 148.
- After receiving White Zetsu power, his complexion and chakra recover substantially despite the loss of an arm and a leg 154.
- Following further modification, one arm remains visibly pale, identifying it as White Zetsu tissue 177.
Personality
Nagato began as an idealist devoted to Yahiko's dream, but grief, war, and manipulation made him ruthless. He believes peace can be created only when the world fears a single overwhelming power, accepting the role of the Shinobi World's “evil” if it ends war 108 180.
He is fiercely independent and rejects being treated as Madara's instrument. His confidence in the Rinnegan leads him to call himself a god, underestimate opponents, and persist in battles beyond his physical limits 142 143. Repeated defeats by Uchiha Sou and Obito's revelations eventually force him to confront that his eyes and supposed destiny were part of Madara's design 180 183.
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan
Nagato wielded Uchiha Madara's transplanted Rinnegan for most of his career. The eyes granted immense chakra-based power, but their consumption strained his body and life force because they were not originally his 130 180.
- Uses gravitational attraction through Banshō Ten'in 130.
- Controls repulsive force and gravity through the Deva Path 148.
- Creates Chibaku Tensei to imprison targets within a massive satellite-like construct 178.
- Can summon creatures, absorb and seal chakra, and extract or probe memories through Rinnegan powers 148.
- Eventually relinquishes the Rinnegan in exchange for Byakugan 209.
Six Paths of Pain
Nagato controls multiple corpses remotely through chakra receivers. His principal combat body is Yahiko's corpse, which serves as the Deva Path 129 149.
- The Deva Path is Nagato's strongest Path and specializes in direct offensive power 129.
- The Animal Path can summon the other Paths into an operation area 135.
- Remote control requires Nagato's main body to remain within range, creating a strategic weakness 128.
- Severe injury to Nagato disrupts his ability to maintain control over the Paths 150.
Limbo: Border Jail
Nagato creates invisible chakra shadows that operate in the Limbo dimension while attacking targets in the physical world 178 203.
- Deploys three Limbo clones against Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki 203.
- The clones can inflict devastating physical blows while remaining hidden from ordinary perception 203.
- Uchiha Sou can counter the technique easily, and previously destroyed Nagato's Limbo clones 178 203.
Demonic Statue of the Outer Path
Nagato can summon and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, the husk of the Ten-Tails 105 148.
- Uses the Statue as a massive combat weapon against Uchiha Sou's Susanoo 149.
- The Statue's chakra once sustained Nagato's failing body through pipes connected to him 148.
- Its use allows Nagato to fight at greater output but places severe strain on his control and body 148 149.
Yin–Yang Release and Uzumaki Sealing Techniques
After preparing for the loss of the Rinnegan, Nagato independently masters Yin–Yang Release and trains his body rather than relying solely on ocular power 209.
- Plans to combine Yin–Yang Release with Uzumaki Clan sealing techniques after receiving the Byakugan 214.
- Retains his White Zetsu-enhanced body and Uzumaki vitality after surrendering the Rinnegan 214.
- Can still participate in tailed-beast capture operations alongside Obito despite losing the Rinnegan 215.
Relationships
- Yahiko — Former friend and original Akatsuki leader; Yahiko's death drives Nagato to take control of Akatsuki and pursue peace through force 108 143.
- Konan — Longtime companion and protector of Nagato's main body; she remains at his side through his injuries and later learns of his changing views 154 183.
- Jiraiya — Former teacher whose ideals Nagato once represented; Jiraiya recognizes that Yahiko is dead and that Nagato is controlling Pain 148 150.
- Uchiha Obito — Initially presented to Nagato as Uchiha Madara, later reveals his true identity and the origin of Nagato's Rinnegan; they become allies against Madara's control 180 183.
- Uchiha Madara — The original owner of Nagato's Rinnegan and the architect of his manipulation; Nagato ultimately recognizes himself as one of Madara's pawns 180 183.
- Uchiha Sou — Nagato's principal rival; Sou repeatedly defeats him, forcing Nagato to recognize the limits of his borrowed Rinnegan and his own self-image as a god 129 143 178.
- Kakuzu — Akatsuki recruit whom Nagato directs during operations in the Land of Wind and against Kumogakure 128 135.
- Sasori — Akatsuki recruit and operational ally; joins Pain and Kakuzu during the Land of Wind conflict and the Kage Summit ambush 128 143.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rise of Pain
Following Yahiko's death, Nagato uses Pain and the Rinnegan to remake Akatsuki into an organization willing to inflict destruction for peace. His campaign targets the great nations and treats the suffering of Loulan and the Land of Rain as examples of their oppression 108 128.
Conflicts with Uchiha Sou
Nagato battles Uchiha Sou in the Land of Wind, at the Kage Summit, and in Amegakure. Each confrontation exposes new Rinnegan abilities, but each ends with Uchiha Sou overwhelming him through greater power, preparation, or superior control of space-time techniques 129 143 148 178.
Defense of Amegakure
When the four great villages invade the Land of Rain, Nagato chooses to defend Amegakure personally with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. The battle destroys Amegakure and leaves him critically injured, costing him limbs and forcing him to rely further on White Zetsu augmentation 148 149 154.
Break from Madara's Design
Obito reveals that Nagato's Rinnegan belonged to Uchiha Madara and that Nagato was intended to serve as a proxy for Madara's plans. Nagato accepts the truth, sees Obito as another victim of manipulation, and redirects his hostility toward Madara 180 183.
Later Operations
Nagato suppresses six jinchuriki during an Akatsuki operation before Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki defeats him with ease, further shattering his belief that he stands at the world's pinnacle 203. He later gives up the Rinnegan, receives Byakugan, and joins Obito in raids intended to seize tailed-beast chakra from other villages 209 214 215.
