History

Third Shinobi World War

Konoha fought on several fronts during the war, including the Land of Whirlpools against Kirigakure. Child ninja such as Uchiha Sou were deployed there, while Orochimaru commanded Konoha's forces in the region. Orochimaru gave Sou comparatively favorable treatment after learning of his Sharingan, assigning Hyuga support for necessary missions rather than sending him on suicide assignments. 1

Sou's detached force operated behind Kirigakure lines, building ties with resistance groups in the Land of Whirlpools and contributing to Kirigakure's retreats. Konoha later publicized his achievements to raise wartime morale, including the disruption of Kirigakure's rear and the defeat of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. 40 60

Post-war political shift

The war's end in Konoha Year 47 reshaped the village's leadership. Orochimaru became Fourth Hokage, while Uchiha Sou secured the post of Anbu Minister and began working with Orochimaru as a political partner. 112

Under Sou's leadership, the Uchiha Clan gained a place among Konoha's governing insiders. The Uchiha Military Police Force was split, with the clan retaining the Security Department. 110

Sou's subsequent appointment as Chief Hokage Assistant and Advisor placed him in practical control of much of the village administration. Sarutobi Hiruzen's faction regarded this as the rise of an “acting Hokage” and a major threat to its remaining influence. 133 134

Alliance era

Konoha used its military strength and political initiative to anchor the Four Kage Alliance. Alliance meetings were held within the Land of Fire rather than neutral territory, reflecting Konoha's dominant position. 171

After the Akatsuki withdrew to the Land of Water, Konoha helped organize a joint response with the other major villages. Its personnel, including Uchiha Sou, the Sannin, Namikaze Minato, Hyuga Mukai, and Uchiha Shisui, gave it considerable influence in negotiations over troop deployments, resources, and command. 150 151

The alliance gradually developed beyond an emergency military coalition. Konoha and Orochimaru promoted shared rules, policies, and cooperation among the villages rather than pursuing their destruction. 175

Fifth Hokage era

By Konoha's sixtieth year, Orochimaru had largely withdrawn from routine governance to research Momoshiki's corpse, while Sou ran most village affairs in practice. 208

Three years later, Sou was formally inaugurated as Fifth Hokage. The event marked the beginning of his era and coincided with greater unity among the shinobi villages in response to threats from Akatsuki and the Ōtsutsuki. 218

Research and Development

Konoha openly pursues bloodline research. Orochimaru identifies the study of existing and lost kekkei genkai—including Wood Release—as a continuing village priority. 86

Its research apparatus becomes increasingly central under Orochimaru and Sou. Projects include Senju Hashirama's cells, White Zetsu-derived materials, cellular fusion, Senjutsu, Kekkei Genkai fusion, and the development of Yin Release and Yang Release. 135 151 165

By the time of the Ōtsutsuki crisis, Yin Release and Yang Release have been widely disseminated in Konoha. Its shinobi clans make rapid progress by combining these releases with their inherited techniques and bloodlines. 220

Military Affairs

Nine-Tails incident

During Kushina's childbirth, Konoha deployed its Barrier Team, Sensor Team, and Root personnel around the protected location. Despite these measures, the masked Obito infiltrated the site and threatened both Kushina and the newborn Naruto. 121

The incident became a major political point afterward: Sarutobi Hiruzen complained that the public credited Uchiha Sou with resolving the crisis despite Root's losses. 134

Foreign operations

Konoha's Anbu undertook operations in Kirigakure that helped trigger internal conflict, eliminate the Kaguya Clan, weaken Elder Genji's faction, and establish contact with bloodline clans seeking an escape route. 133

Ōtsutsuki threat
