Background

Obito was once a Konoha shinobi assigned to Team Minato alongside Kakashi Hatake and Nohara Rin. He was openly infatuated with Rin, keeping a Team Minato photograph with Kakashi's face covered and eagerly anticipating missions because they let him spend time with her. His jealousy of Haori begins when he learns that Haori had spent time with Rin before relaying his mission notice. 3

After being critically injured, Obito is brought to Madara by White Zetsu. Madara saves him because he sees Obito's kind-hearted nature and awakened Sharingan as qualities that could make him useful. Once awake, Obito insists on returning to Konoha despite Madara's efforts to convince him that his sacrifice was meaningless. 13 28

His outlook darkens after he is not recognized by Kakashi and Rin. The resulting emotional turmoil awakens his Mangekyō Sharingan and deepens his resentment toward his former teammates, Haori, and the world he believes has taken everything from him. 53 93

Appearance

Obito operates as a masked rogue ninja, concealing his identity while using his Sharingan and space-time ninjutsu.

  • Wears a black robe while on covert operations. 100
  • Uses a spiral-patterned mask with a single eyehole for his Sharingan. 100 155
  • His recovered body is described as colder and more composed than in his youth. 59
  • Frequently suffers severe arm injuries or deliberately severs an arm to escape enemy marks and attacks. 109 128 141

Personality

Obito begins as an emotional and easily embarrassed young shinobi whose affection for Rin strongly shapes his choices. He is competitive with Kakashi and bitterly jealous of Haori, especially when he believes either has taken something that should have belonged to him. 3 180

Following Madara's intervention and repeated defeats, he becomes colder, more hostile, and increasingly obsessed with recognition, revenge, and creating a new world under his control. He justifies targeting Rin as a form of “mercy,” believing that the world around him is false and that she can be restored in the world he intends to create. 127

Despite his anger, Obito repeatedly acknowledges his own weakness after failures against Haori, Minato, Kakashi, Shisui, and Hikari. His response is usually to seek another source of power rather than abandon his ambitions. 111 141 201

Abilities & Skills

Mangekyō Sharingan and Kamui

Obito's Mangekyō Sharingan grants him Kamui, a space-time technique used for intangibility, teleportation, and access to his personal dimension.

  • Can evade attacks by distorting his body through space. 100
  • Can transport himself and others into the Kamui Dimension. 100 101
  • Uses Kamui to infiltrate Konoha and escape dangerous situations. 150 201
  • His stolen eye is held by Kakashi, allowing Kakashi to interfere with or counter aspects of Obito's spatial ability. 100 109
  • Haori is able to breach the Kamui Dimension, trap Obito there, and exploit his weaker close-quarters fundamentals. 100 101

White Zetsu and Hashirama Cells

Obito's body contains White Zetsu cells and the First Hokage's power, granting him exceptional recovery and access to enhanced techniques.

  • White Zetsu cells erupt through his body when his Mangekyō awakens. 53
  • Orochimaru identifies Hashirama cells within him and considers his Sharingan–Wood Release combination significant. 97
  • His regenerative ability and survival potential make him difficult to kill even when he is wounded or targeted by genjutsu. 202
  • He relies on Izanagi as an additional means of surviving lethal situations. 202

Wood Release

After years of training, Obito develops Wood Release as his primary offensive supplement to his incomplete Sharingan.

  • Can form thorns and vines from his arm in combat. 144
  • Uses Wood Release to compensate for the loss of one eye and strengthen his Yin–Yang Release foundation. 141
  • Has controlled the Fourth Mizukage and used tailed beasts, including the One-Tail, as destructive tools. 134 175

Rinnegan and Ten-Tails Power

Obito eventually obtains a Rinnegan and uses the Ten-Tails to forcibly elevate his power.

  • Activates the Eye of the Moon Plan after merging with the Ten-Tails. 235
  • Uses Yin–Yang Release to create a black shield against Hikari's Chakra Beads. 236
  • Is defeated by Hikari despite becoming the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki. 237
  • Madara seals his Rinnegan, causing him to lose control of the Ten-Tails before Madara absorbs it himself. 237
