Background / History

Advanced Nurturing High School assigns students to classes from A through D based on its assessment of their overall excellence. Class A is the highest designation, while Class D is assigned to students the school considers least suitable. Academic ability and physical strength alone do not determine placement. 47 48

Only students who graduate from Class A receive the school’s advertised 100% advancement and employment benefits. However, Class A is not permanently secured: any class that surpasses the class above it in class points takes its designation. 13 47

Kageya Shinjitsu first confirmed the school’s A-to-D hierarchy through the second-year rating board, where Class A held 1,880 points against Class D’s 300. 6 He later entered the first-year Class A area during class hours to observe its students. Although homeroom teacher Mashima Tomoya initially ordered him out, Kageya remained outside the classroom for the full lesson. 10

Kageya judged the first-year Class A students to be highly self-managed and academically capable. Unlike the lower-ranked classes, they remained focused on lessons despite his disruptive presence and had already selected a leader-like figure on their first day. 11

Agreement with Kageya Shinjitsu

Kageya approached Class A through its leader, Katsuragi Kohei, offering to ensure that Class D remained at the bottom of the rankings for two months. He used the possibility of Class B or Class C overtaking Class A—and the possibility of an internal traitor within Class A—to pressure Katsuragi into consulting his classmates. 15

Class A accepted a six-million-point arrangement. Its members viewed the deal as a way to protect their position, remove a future nuisance from Class D, and potentially gain Kageya as a capable transfer student once he acquired the twenty million points required for a class change. 16
