Background / History
Kushida first meets Kageya Shinjitsu on the bus to Advanced Nurturing High School. After learning that they are assigned as desk mates in Class D, she repeatedly corrects his deliberate or careless misnaming of her and insists that he remember “Kushida Kikyo.” 1 2
During the class introductions, she presents herself as a student who wants to learn every classmate's name, exchange contact information, and make memories with everyone. She publicly calls Kageya her first friend at the school after seeing him give up his bus seat for an elderly woman. 4
She continues trying to draw the withdrawn Kageya into the class's social circles, offering introductions and inviting him to spend time with her even when he repeatedly calls her by incorrect names. She also defends him when Ike Kanji's group tears his swimsuit and exposes his scars, criticizing the boys' behavior and portraying Kageya as a fundamentally good but socially awkward person. 10 17 23 24
Kushida's public image conceals a hostile private side. Kageya discovers her alone near a lakeside railing, kicking it while cursing him; when she realizes he witnessed this, she threatens to spread a false accusation if he exposes her behavior. 38 39
After Kageya turns her threats back on her through intimidation and the prospect of exposing her secret, Kushida proposes a private dating arrangement. They agree to keep the relationship secret, share responsibility for protecting their respective secrets, and exchange information about the school and other students. 41
Following the arrangement, Kushida continues to act as Class D's cheerful “angel” in public while using private time with Kageya to vent her anger. Her resentment of Horikita Suzune intensifies, particularly when Karuizawa Kei begins studying with and socializing around Horikita. 42 When Class D's private-point balance reaches zero, Kushida transfers her remaining points to Kageya in anticipation that classmates may ask her for loans, then pretends to be shocked alongside the class when the monthly distribution fails to arrive. 43
