Background / History
Before arriving in the world of Classroom of the Elite, Hoya was a college graduate with a finance degree who supported himself through odd jobs. He knew the setting chiefly through fanfiction rather than the original story. Placed in Class C, he chose to advise Ryuen Shoko when she moved to take control of the class 1.
Hoya was the first to acknowledge Ryuen as Class C’s leader. He called her a “hegemon” rather than a tyrant, then helped secure the class’s acceptance of her rule. He later sought out Shiina Hiyori as a second adviser, telling her that he needed someone capable of challenging his decisions 1 2 5.
Appearance
Hoya has a delicate, pleasant-looking face rather than a strikingly handsome one 35.
- He is shorter than Yamada Albert 26.
Personality
Hoya prefers to work behind the scenes rather than lead openly. His deference to Ryuen is partly calculated: he flatters her, fears her fighting ability, and does not want the work of being Class C’s boss. Shiina comes to see their partnership less as king and subject than as a blade and the person wielding it 4 5 9.
He recognizes limits to his intelligence. Although he benefits from knowledge of the setting, he describes his own intelligence rating as C and recruits Shiina, rated A-, to question his plans 1 5. His schemes can be ruthless, particularly when he seeks leverage over students in other classes; he also cooks for Ryuen, cares for her when she is unwell, and intervenes when Karuizawa Kei is bullied 19 20 31 49.
